Naiduniya Representative, Indore. Relief has been announced for income tax payers on the last day of the year. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended the deadline for filing belated income tax returns.

The deadline was ending on 31st December. Now taxpayers will be able to file returns till January 15. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued a notification in this regard.

There has been a significant change in the schedule of filing income tax returns over the years. The last date for filing returns for the financial year 2023-2024 was fixed as July 31.

After this, individual tax payers could file delayed returns till December 31.

For late filing of returns, taxpayers with income up to Rs 5 lakh have to pay a penalty of Rs 1,000 and those with income above Rs 5,000 have to pay a penalty.

• According to CA Pankaj Shah, the penalty would have increased for any individual taxpayer who filed delayed returns as per the predetermined deadline from January 1, 2025.
• They would have had to pay a penalty of up to 25 percent of the tax and interest. Now, with the notification issued by CBDT, taxpayers are getting relief from this additional burden.
• They will be able to file their returns only with a penalty of Rs 1,000 and Rs 5,000.
• This relaxation of 15 days is only for individual taxpayers, that is, firms are not getting the benefit of this extended period.
• Besides, there are some rules with delayed returns that the taxpayer is not able to carry forward his losses and as per the rules, certain exemptions are also not available.

Consumers can now complain about leakage while sitting at home by changing address and agency.
