The Supreme Court on Wednesday (January 8, 2025) released a man named Om Prakash after nearly 25 years in jail. released Have done. Om Prakash was sentenced to jail in 1994 for murdering his boss and his family. Om Prakash was caught by the police in 2001. He told that in 2001 he was 20 years old. In this case, the lower court had sentenced him as an adult. The lower court had sentenced him to death. The High Court also upheld his punishment. However, Omprakash claimed that he was a minor.
After this, the Supreme Court also upheld his punishment and did not accept the claim of being a minor. His reconsideration petition was also rejected. The matter did not stop here. Om Prakash then filed a mercy petition with the President in this matter. Here also his petition was rejected. When he petitioned the President for the second time, his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and he would not be released until he was 60 years old.
Tired and defeated, Omprakash again approached the Supreme Court with the claim of a minor, but this time the court refused to take his case. In 2019, he again approached the High Court on the grounds that he was a minor, but the petition was rejected. Meanwhile, a test of his bones was done which revealed that he would have been around 14 years old at the time of the incident. After this, in the hearing held in the Supreme Court, he was ordered to be released on January 7, 2025.
The Supreme Court said, “This is a case in which the person is suffering because of the mistake of going to the court. We are told that his conduct in jail has been normal and there is no report against him. He lost the opportunity to reintegrate into society. The time he has lost can never be recovered through no fault of his.” After being caught and sentenced in 2001, Om Prakash claimed that he was a minor in front of different courts 7-8 times, but due to a mistake in the system, he was released after 25 years.
