If breathing can be controlled then life can be prolonged. Now science has also proved it. A research by AIIMS Bhopal has revealed that slowing down the rate of respiration strengthens the heart, brain and lungs. This is also the secret of long life.
Tortoise breathes four times a minute
Dr. Varun Malhotra, Associate Professor in the Department of AYUSH Physiology at AIIMS Bhopal, has done this research on slow breathing. They say that a sea turtle breathes only four times in a minute. His age is generally 300 years.
If a person can slow down his breathing, his lifespan can also increase. His research revealed that slow breathing improves the health of many body parts.
Study done on 150 people
The pressure on them reduces and their activity increases. Due to this, the lifespan of a person becomes longer. Dr. Malhotra and his team have come to this conclusion after studying the effects of yogic activity on 150 people for five years. Recently, this research of Dr. Varun Malhotra has also been published in the international journal Research Gate.
Direct effect on the functioning of these organs
- Heart: Slow breathing can bring the heart rate up to 60, which puts less pressure on the heart.
- Lungs: The level of oxygen in the lungs increases and carbon dioxide is effectively expelled.
- Brain: Due to slow breathing, the mind remains calm, due to which negative emotions like fear, anger and stress can be controlled.

Dr. Malhotra told that a healthy person breathes 12 to 20 times in a minute. Its general average is 18 times. During running or heavy exertion its rate increases to 35 to 40 times. While sleeping, 12 to 15 respirations take place in one minute. By reducing it to twice a minute during yogic practices, the benefits increase.
Control will be achieved through pranayam and yoga practice.
Dr. Malhotra said that breathing techniques like pranayama and kriyayoga can slow down the rate of breathing. In the research, they used eight types of pranayam, which reduced the respiratory rate in the participants. Dr. Malhotra says that there are four powers in the human body – mind, life force, sexual power and breath. Their balance not only maintains health but also helps in longevity.
