National Eligibility cum Entrance Examination (NEET) is the most important examination for admission to medical education in India. This exam is conducted in different languages, so that students can choose the language as per their convenience. In the last few years, there has been a significant increase in the number of students appearing in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil and other regional languages. It is not only empowering the language rights of students, but also making medical education more inclusive.

Heavy boom in the number of students taking exams in Hindi medium
If we talk about Hindi language, then the number of students taking the exam is increasing rapidly. In 2019, 1,79,857 students took the exam in Hindi medium, while in 2024 this number increased to 3,57,908. That is, the number of students choosing Hindi medium in five years has almost doubled. This is a positive sign for those students who prioritize studies in their mother tongue and want to move forward in the medical field.
Rapid growth in Bengali, Gujarati and Tamil also
There has also been a significant increase in the number of students appearing in Bengali language. It was selected by only 4,750 students in 2019, while in 2024 the number increased to 48,265. Similarly, the number of students in Gujarati language has also increased, where there were 59,395 students in 2019, while in 2024 it increased to 58,836.
There has also been a big jump in the number of students appearing in Tamil language. In 2019, where only 1,017 students selected Tamil, in 2024 the number reached 36,333. This shows that the role of regional languages in medical education is constantly increasing and students are getting an opportunity to take the exam in their favorite language.
Status of Marathi and Odia languages
The number of students appearing in Marathi and Odia has been relatively low. In 2019, 31,239 students took the exam in Marathi medium, but by 2024 this number decreased to 1,759. Similarly, the number of students appearing for the examination in Odia language also saw a decline, which was 31,490 in 2019 and reduced to 1,312 in 2024.
Need to encourage linguistic diversity
In a multilingual country like India, it is necessary that the education system should provide equal opportunities to students of all languages. The increasing number of regional languages in the NEET exam shows that students have started giving priority to studies in their mother tongue. Government and educational institutions should make medical studies more accessible in regional languages, so that students can develop their skills better.
