Hobart Hurricanes became BBL champions, first title in 14 years: defeated Sydney Thunder in the final by 7 wickets; Mitchell Owen’s century

Mitchell Owen’s century off 39 balls gave Hobart Hurricanes the BBL title for the first time.

Hobart Hurricanes have won the title of the 14th season of the Big Bash League. On Monday, the team defeated Sydney Thunder by 7 wickets in the final. Batting first in Hobart, Sydney scored 182 runs losing 7 wickets. Hurricanes achieved the target in just 14.1 overs on the basis of opener Mitchell Owen’s century.

Hurricanes have won the BBL title for the first time, the team finished the group stage by topping the points table. Mitchell Owen, who scored a century, was also the player of the final.

Thunder got a strong start Hobart won the toss and elected to bowl at Bellerive Oval. Jason Sangha and captain David Warner made a strong opening partnership from Sydney. Both added 97 runs in 10.2 overs. Here Warner was out after scoring 48 runs. After him, Matthew Gix returned to the pavilion without opening his account. Both wickets were taken by Hobart captain Nathan Ellis.

He also became the player for Hobart who hit the most sixes in an innings.

Mitchell Owen equaled the record of scoring a century in the fewest balls in BBL.

McDermott-Wade won After the fall of 3 wickets for 139 runs, Ben McDermott and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade completed the remaining work. Wade scored 32 runs on 17 balls, while McDermott scored 18 runs on 12 balls. It was McDermott who hit a four on the first ball of the 15th over and gave the team victory by 7 wickets. From Thunder, Tanveer Sangha got 2 wickets and Nathan McAndrew got 1 wicket.

First title in 14 years The first season of the Big Bash League was played in 2011–12. Then Sydney Sixers won the title by defeating Perth Scorchers. Hobart also made it to the finals in 2013–14 and 2017–18. Both times he had to finish as runner-up. They had lost against Perth and Adelaide.

Both Sydney and Hobart teams now have 1-1 BBL titles.

Hobart now made it to the finals after 6 years by becoming the group topper. The team also defeated Sydney Sixers in a one-sided manner in the qualifiers and now won the first title by winning the final by 7 wickets. Sydney Thunder won their only title in the 2015–16 season. Perth Scorchers have won the maximum 5 titles, while Brisbane Heat became the champion last season.
