This time the efforts to include the Ger of the historic Rangpanchami of Indore in the list of UNESCO’s cultural heritage are going to be a tough challenge. Indore district administration has been striving for the last several years to include ger in the list. This time also a proposal will be sent, but this time the Ministry of Culture is going to send a proposal to include the famous Holi of Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana in this list.
In such a situation, only one tradition can be found in the cultural category, so there can be a tough fight between the Ger of Indore and the Holi of Braj. Holi is celebrated in different forms all over the country. In this, the history of Holi of Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana is years old, while the tradition of ger on Rangpanchami in Indore started 70-75 years ago.

Lathmar Holi is played in Barsana. Whereas Holi of flowers is famous in the Banke Bihari temple of Vrindavan. Holi and Rangpanchami have been gathered on Holi and Rangpanchami since the reign of Holkar dynasty at Rajwada in Indore, but the tradition of extracting ger started later.
Efforts to provide historical recognition continue
Efforts began to include Indore’s Ger of Indore in the UNESCO list about five years ago. Special videography and documentation were done by the district administration and sent to UNESCO. This time also efforts are on to provide historical recognition to this event. In such a situation, the Ger of Indore will have to prove its uniqueness amidst the strong claim of Braj’s Holi.
Meaning of joining UNESCO
The inclusion of UNESCO’s World Heritage List gives a global recognition to a tradition or site, which increases its identity and importance. Along with this, tourism, employment and economy are also promoted. If the UNESCO list includes ger on Rangpanchami in Indore, it will help in protecting the cultural heritage of the state.
Garba of Gujarat joined two years ago
In the year 2023, Indore’s Ger was the most attempted to include the UNESCO list, but the traditional Garba dance of Gujarat was included in the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) list and Indore’s claim weakened. At the same time, Indore did not get a place due to no inclusion of anyone from the cultural heritage category in 2024.
A dozen heritage of India included
The list of UNESCO’s abstract cultural heritage (ICH) includes more than 730 abstract heritage from about 145 countries. This includes about a dozen abstract heritage of India including Kolkata’s Durga Puja, Kumbh Mela, Chhau dance, Kalbeliya folk songs and dance of Rajasthan and Garba.
Earlier also the administration had sent a proposal to Delhi
In Delhi, the Culture Minister will meet and discuss about the historic Ger, so that efforts to include the historic Ger of Indore in the UNESCO list can also be intensified.
