Giving money to women every month was started in Madhya Pradesh. There the then Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan had started giving Rs 1000 every month to eligible women. After the elections held in December 2023, when BJP government was formed again in the state, the amount given under this scheme was increased to Rs 1250 per month. Seeing this success in sending money to the bank accounts of women in Madhya Pradesh, there was a race to start such schemes.

In which state the schemes are running

Madhya Pradesh’s neighboring Chhattisgarh has also started such a scheme by the name of Mahtari Vandan Yojana. Under this scheme, one thousand rupees per month is paid to the eligible women. It is not that only in BJP ruled states, the scheme of giving money to women every month is being run. Congress has also started such schemes in those states where it is in government. Under this, the Congress government of Karnataka is running the Gruhalakshmi scheme. Under this scheme, two thousand rupees are given every month to the eligible woman. Whereas the Congress government of Telangana gives Rs 2500 every month to the eligible women under the Mahalaxmi Yojana. The Congress government of Himachal Pradesh gives Rs 1500 every month under the Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh-Samman Nidhi Yojana.

Such schemes are becoming a major means of winning elections. That’s why every party is making such announcements in election states or Lok Sabha elections. In this series, Congress has made the latest announcement for Delhi. At the same time, Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar has also promised to start ‘Mai Bahin Maan Yojana’ if its government is formed after the assembly elections. Under this, the party has promised to give two and a half thousand rupees every month to women.

Started in South India

Such schemes were started long ago in South India. In Tamil Nadu, schemes like providing TV and mixer to families were running for a long time. In the 2021 assembly elections, the opposition AIADMK in its election manifesto had promised to provide six free LPG cylinders to every family every year, free houses, Rs 7,500 per year to farmers, free solar cooking stoves and washing machines. Apart from this, the party had promised a government job to a member of those families in which there is no one in government job. Bihar has been running a campaign to woo women votes for a long time. Under this, he gave free bicycles to girls in 2005-06. Later he arranged for 50 percent reservation for women in local bodies.

Women’s participation in elections is continuously increasing. According to the Election Commission, in last year’s Lok Sabha elections, the number of women voters per thousand male voters was 946. Earlier in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, there were 926 women voters for every one thousand male voters. According to the Commission, 65.78 percent women and 65.55 percent men voted in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
