How the stabbing of a 14-year-old boy ended the 50-year Assad regime in Syria

New Delhi:

In Syria, rebel groups captured the capital Damascus on Sunday. With this, the power of Basar al-Assad came to an end after the long-running civil war. The movement that started for the establishment of democracy during the Arab Spring in Syria turned into a civil war and thousands of people lost their lives. Whenever this movement is discussed in Syria, one name that comes up is that of Mouwiya Syasneh. 14 year old Mouwiya Syasneh was the same person whose painting started the movement in Syria.

“Azac El Dor”
13 years ago today, a long struggle was witnessed in Syria for the demand put forward by a 14 year old youth, Mouwiya Syasneh, through his painting. In 2011, Mouwiya Syasneh made a painting on a wall in the southern Syrian city of Daraa. , It was written “Azaak el Dor” meaning, ‘Now it’s your turn, doctor.’ Here the doctor was referring to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. This was the same period when movements were taking place in many Arab and African countries.

Police detained Mouwiya Syasneh for 26 days
Mouwiya Syasneh had to pay a heavy price for this one painting and was detained by the police for 26 days. There were demonstrations against the arrest of Mouwiya Syasneh. To stop the protesters, the police of Basar al-Assad also opened fire at many places. The Free Syrian Army (FSA) emerged in Syria during the movement in support of Mouwiya Syasneh. In which many people who fled from Assad’s army participated. Extremist groups also took advantage of this rebellion, due to which violence spread further in many parts.

The year 2011 was very important for Syria
The rule of 2011 will prove to be the most important for Syria. During this time, thousands of Syrian citizens took to the streets demanding democracy, but they had to face heavy government repression. However, various armed rebel groups formed in opposition to the government and by mid-2012, the rebellion escalated into a full-scale civil war.

Assad’s wrong steps spoiled the atmosphere
Assad has been accused of human rights violations, including the use of chemical weapons in Syria during the war, repression of Kurds and forced disappearances. Assad successfully fought rebel groups for years with the help of Russia, Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah. But the rebel groups that suddenly became active recently created a lot of trouble for the Syrian President because Assad’s three allies – Russia, Hezbollah and Iran and Israel – were embroiled in their own conflicts.
