Ravi Shastri on Mohammed Shami: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri raised questions about Mohammed Shami’s fitness and return to action and said that if he had been there, he would have taken him to Australia and allowed the medical team to monitor him on the tour. Let us tell you, India has faced 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. With this defeat, the Indian team is out of the final of the World Test Championship. On this tour, Jasprit Bumrah performed brilliantly and took 32 wickets, but India missed Mohammed Shami a lot at the other end.
Fast bowler Mohammed Shami is out of action since the final of the ODI World Cup against Australia in the year 2023. He needed ankle surgery in February 2024, due to which he remained away from the field for a long time. He made a strong comeback in competitive cricket in November last year in the Ranji Trophy.
Mohammed Shami featured in all three domestic competitions for Bengal over the next month, but was still denied permission by the NCA to travel to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy midway through the series. Before the Boxing Day Test, Shami was officially dropped from joining the Indian team for the Australia tour.
Speaking to ICC Review, Ravi Shastri said, “I would have kept him a part of the team and made sure that he got rehabilitation with the team. And then if we had thought till the third Test match, no, this boy cannot play the rest of the series.” If so, I will let him go.”
Ravi Shastri said, “But I would have brought him with the team, kept him, monitored him with the best physio and also got the best advice from the international physios present in Australia and see how he is doing. But I would have brought him into the mix. “Kept.”
Earlier there was hope about Mohammed Shami that he would be completely fit for the Australian tour. But after the Test series between India and Bangladesh, a report regarding Mohammed Shami claimed that he has suffered an injury again, due to which he may be out of the Australian tour.
Regarding these media reports, Ravi Shastri said, “To be honest, I was very surprised by the conversation going on in the media as to what happened to Shami. When it comes to recovery, where is he? He may be in NCA. Why can’t there be proper communication on where he has been sitting, I would have brought him to Australia.
Ravi Shastri believes that the inclusion of Mohammed Shami in the team would not only have increased the experience but would also have reduced the pressure and workload on the shoulders of Jasprit Bumrah. Jasprit Bumrah bowled 151.2 overs in this series and due to back spasm he had to stay out of action on the last day of the SCG Test. Bumrah has never bowled as much as he has in this series.
Ravi Shastri said, “The match was tied 1-1 in Melbourne. You just needed that experience and support. As you know, he would have also raised the level. And there were two guys (Bumrah and Shami). Must have been.” Shastri said, “Pat Cummins could not have done it on his own, Scotty Boland had to step in. So you needed a bowler with his experience. You know as much as Mohammed Siraj tried, you need Shami’s experience.” Was.”
