The Parliament session has started again after the holiday of Holi. As soon as Parliament begins, opposition parties have started surrounding the government on various issues. Talking about Rajya Sabha, opposition parties, including TMC, are demanding discussion on the issue of voter list disturbances. TMC MP Derek O Bryan said that after four days, Parliament will work again today. The opposition wants a discussion on an issue which is the mainstay of democracy. Is the government ready to discuss this? Many opposition parties are demanding a discussion on the issue of alleged fraud of EPIC number (voter ID card number) in Parliament, while parties from South Indian states also want to discuss the issue of delimitation. Opposition parties have said that these issues should be discussed in Parliament, whether it is under any rule.

TMC Rajya Sabha member Derek O Bryan said on Monday that the opposition wants a debate on the issue of fake voter ID, but is the government ready for it? After the four -day holiday, the proceedings of the budget session of Parliament on Monday are starting again. In the Rajya Sabha, TMC Parliamentary Party leader O Bryan posted on the social media platform ‘X’ on Monday morning that the issue is “origin of democracy.” He also tagged his March 12 post in which he demanded a discussion next week (under Rule 176) on the subject of fake voter ID. O Bryan said, “Action is starting again in Parliament after a four -day holiday. The opposition wants to debate the issue which is the origin of democracy. Is the government ready?”

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee raised the issue of EPIC number similar to voter ID cards in various states on February 27. In a memorandum submitted to the Election Commission last week, TMC had said that “there have been cases of fake voter registration using fake Aadhaar cards.” The Chief Election Commissioner has called a meeting with the Union Home Secretary, Legislative Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to discuss the issue on 18 March.

The Election Commission issued a statement on March 2, saying that before transferring the voter list database of all states to ERONET (Electoral Roll Management) platform, some voters of various states and union territories were allotted equal EPIC numbers due to “decentralized and hand -working arrangements” (manual system). The Commission also said that some voters may have the same EPIC numbers, but other details such as demographic information, assembly constituencies and polling stations are different.

In another statement, the Election Commission said that after allotment of EPIC series to states and union territories in 2000, some electoral nomination officials did not use the correct series. The Election Commission said that it has now decided to solve this “long pending issue” and in the next three months, after detailed discussion with the technical teams and the Chief Electoral Officers of the respective states, the process of solving the problem of the same EPIC number will be adopted. In addition, the Commission has directed its electoral system in the states to hold regular meetings with political parties and resolve issues under the prescribed procedures.
