Nathan Lyon on Yashasvi Jaiswal run out: Nathan Lyon humorously described Yashasvi Jaiswal’s run out as “incomprehensible” as the blunder left the Indian team in a dilemma on the second day of the fourth Test at the MCG. The incident, which turned a solid Indian reply into a precarious one, could prove to be the defining moment of the Test. India were progressing to 153/2, Jaiswal and Kohli made a 102-run partnership, but then trouble struck. In the 43rd over, Jaiswal flicked Scott Boland’s ball towards Pat Cummins at mid-on and casually asked for a run.
However, Kohli remained steady at the non-striker end, leaving Jaiswal trapped in the middle of the pitch. Cummins quickly caught the ball and threw it to Alex Carey, who completed the run-out. The dismissal ended Jaiswal’s brilliant innings of 82 runs and India lost three wickets for just six runs in the last 30 minutes of the game, leaving them at 164/5 at stumps, three behind Australia’s first innings total of 474 runs. Left behind by 310 runs.
Speaking to ABC, Nathan Lyon expressed both joy and surprise at the incident. Lyon said, “It happened suddenly. They were playing very easily out there. I know pressure does strange things, and we were able to create a little pressure – that’s what it felt like anyway. Silly run-out by coach They are deadly, aren’t they?”
Jaiswal indicated that taking the single was his decision, while Kohli indicated that he never considered the run to be viable. Kohli made no attempt to sacrifice his wicket for Jaiswal as the senior partner, who was the leading scorer in their partnership. Disappointed by this mess, Jaiswal walked off the field and pointed towards Kohli in disbelief.
Adding to India’s woes, Virat hit a wide ball from Boland into the hands of wicketkeeper Alex Carey and was out after scoring 36 runs after just seven balls. Australia’s consistent strategy of forcing Kohli to play balls outside the off stump was ultimately successful, but the momentum of the match changed before Jaiswal was run out.
Lyon credited the run out and subsequent fall of wickets for turning the match in Australia’s favour. Lyon said, “The last few overs were very important for us.” “It was important to break that partnership, and to get Virat out immediately after that – it felt like the momentum came back to us.”
Playing in front of his home crowd, Scott Boland played a key role in Australia’s success in the final hour, dismissing both Kohli and nightwatchman Akash Deep and taking 2 for 24.
