Greg Chappell on Jasprit Bumrah: Former India coach Greg Chappell believes Jasprit Bumrah has the qualities of fast bowlers like Dennis Lillee, Andy Roberts and Richard Hadlee but is building his own legacy that will inspire future generations of fast bowlers. Said that Bumrah is the only player standing between ‘Border Gavaskar Trophy’ and Australia. Greg Chappell has said that Bumrah is one of the most dangerous bowlers in the world.

Chappell wrote in ‘Sydney Morning Herald’, “Bumrah’s combination of skills puts him in a different league. He has (Malcolm) Marshall’s ability to adapt to situations, Lillee’s aggression, Richard Hadlee’s control, Roberts’ strategy, Wasim (Akram) and Waqar (Younis) reverse swing, (Glenn) McGrath’s accuracy, (Dale) There is a mixture of Steyn’s explosiveness, and (Kagiso) Rabada’s modern versatility.

“Lilly had the ability to bowl a line-length that troubled the batsman for long periods of time,” Chappell said. Bumrah is a little behind in this matter but with his different bowling action, he matches Lillee by troubling the batsman with effective yorkers and bouncers.
He said, “Bumrah shares Roberts’ mental agility. Both bowlers use variations to deceive the batsmen. Like Roberts, Bumrah also relies on strategy rather than strength.
He said, “Bumrah has taken 151 wickets in just 30 Tests at an average of 21.03. His ability to excel in a variety of situations is reminiscent of Marshall’s dominance. Bumrah has the amazing ability to sim and swing the ball with reverse swing with the old ball. The batsmen had to face similar uncertainty against Marshall.
Chappell said, “As Ian Botham famously commented about Marshall, he doesn’t give you any respite. Today batsmen also express similar sentiments about Bumrah.
Comparing Hadlee, Chappell said, “Bumrah’s accurate bowling is compared with Hadlee. He has expertise in the conditions of England. His average there is 22.02 and if the conditions favor him even a little then he can devastate any batting attack. He is currently handling the Indian pace attack in the same manner as Hadlee did for New Zealand in his era.
