India vs Australia Test, Border-Gavaskar Trophy: :After India’s 3-1 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, former cricketer Yograj Singh gave his opinion on the poor form of Indian senior batsman Virat Kohli in the series. Highlighting the manner in which Virat was out throughout the series, he insisted that someone should have told the star batsman not to play that shot.
In five Test matches, Kohli managed only 190 runs and was dismissed eight times while chasing balls outside the off-stump. On the other hand, Rohit, who missed the Perth Test due to the birth of his second child, managed only 31 runs in three Tests before being rested for the fifth Test in Sydney.
Singh said that if a player is representing India, he may not need coaching in the traditional sense, but rather man-management to improve his game.
“When you are playing for India, the role of the coach becomes an important question. When you are an exceptional player representing India, you do not need coaching in the traditional sense,” Singh told IANS. You really need someone for man management. Sometimes, a player’s mind gets blocked; they may not be able to score runs. No matter how great a player is, He can’t be bigger than the game.”
“Such players need someone to guide them, who says, ‘Let’s go to the nets and work on this’,” he said. For example, Virat Kohli talks about his favorite shot – the right-hand push. Got out many times while playing, that shot works on Indian pitches, England and other places, but on some pitches where the ball bounces more, someone should have told him, ‘Virat, don’t play this shot’. . Just play straight or drop this ball.”
Yograj Singh further said, “This shows the difference between coaching and management. Coaching is all about identifying and pointing out the technical mistakes of a player. One must identify these technical issues and communicate them to the players. But Rohit Sharma or Who will tell Virat Kohli? He also wants someone to come and tell him what is going wrong.”
He further added, “I think there needs to be proper management – someone who understands when a player’s mind goes off, when they feel depressed, and reassures them, saying, ‘Don’t worry. ‘We are here for you, you will do it because you are a great player.’ Every player faces downs, even the greatest players, it is part of the game.”
Speaking about head coach Gautam Gambhir’s coaching style, Singh said, “Gambhir is a brilliant cricketer who has a brilliant mind. He has the ability to take the team forward. However, where a mistake is made, They tell him – and rightly so. But proper management is necessary to keep young players together.”
He said, “Someone needs to tell him, ‘Virat, it’s no big deal; it happens to everyone’. ‘Rohit, don’t worry, these phases come and go’. ‘Bumrah ‘You’re doing great; just stay focused.’ Young players, especially fast bowlers like Siraj, need someone to stand with them, show them the way and help them understand the nuances of the game.”
Singh concluded, “When players are frustrated, struggling to perform, management becomes the magic wand that lifts them up.”
With a six-wicket defeat in the Sydney Test, India have missed out on a place in the final of the 2025 World Test Championship as Australia will face South Africa in the final at Lord’s in search of their second consecutive title.
