IND vs ENG: Varun’s ‘mystery’, Abhishek’s storm, India’s tremendous start by crushing England by 7 wickets

India vs England 1st T20I: After the brilliant bowling of ‘mystery spinner’ Varun Chakraborty (three wickets for 23 runs), a brilliant half-century inning of Abhishek Sharma (79 runs), India defeated England by seven wickets in the first match of the five-match T20 series on Wednesday. Thanks to Abhishek’s half-century, India scored 133 runs for three wickets in 12.5 overs and took a 1-0 lead in the series with an easy win.

Butler’s half-century innings went in vain

Despite a half-century by captain Jos Buttler (68 runs), the England team could not recover from the initial setbacks and were reduced to 132 runs in 20 overs. For that, apart from Butler, only two other batsmen could reach double digits. In response, Abhishek and wicketkeeper batsman Sanju Samson (26 runs) made a fast start and added 41 runs for the first wicket. Samson hit four fours and one six in 20 balls.

Joffra Archer took two wickets

Samson’s innings ended when he lifted the ball high in an attempt to pull the ball from Jofra Archer (2 for 21) and Gus Atkinson took a brilliant catch while running from the boundary. Captain Suryakumar Yadav also returned to the pavilion in the same fifth over. He touched Archer’s leg cutter ball with his bat and wicketkeeper Phil Salt took a brilliant catch.

Abhishek’s aggressive style

After losing two wickets in the powerplay, Abhishek batted aggressively and snatched the match from England by hitting eight sixes and five fours in 34 balls, due to which India achieved the target with 43 balls remaining. Abhishek, playing at a strike rate of 200, made a partnership of 84 runs for the third wicket with Tilak Verma (19 not out).

Abhishek had all kinds of shots in his quiver, he did flicks, uppercuts and scored runs straight on the boundary. Abhishek got a lease of life on 29 runs when Adil Rashid dropped a sharp return catch. Taking advantage of this, the Indian opening batsman showed his determination and hit one four and two sky-high sixes on consecutive balls on this leg spinner.

Abhishek completed his half-century in brilliant style, he hit a hook shot on the fast ball of Jamie Overton. In this way, India had completed 100 runs for two wickets in 10 overs, due to which the target remained a mere formality.

Arshdeep Singh created history

Earlier, India won the toss and decided to bowl and coach Gautam Gambhir decided not to include fit Mohammed Shami in the playing eleven. Despite dew, India decided to include three spinners Chakraborty, Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi.

These three fast bowlers played well with Arshdeep Singh, who dismissed both England’s openers Phil Salt (0) and Ben Duckett (04) in consecutive overs. Thanks to this performance, Arshdeep became India’s highest wicket-taker in T20 International with 97 wickets, surpassing Yuzvendra Chahal. Acting captain Suryakumar used his spinners well.
