US President Donald Trump There is an atmosphere of upheaval worldwide since he became President. Trump is trying to pressurize countries around the world with his decision. Trump had announced to impose similar tariffs on countries doing business with America, becoming President. Now they are implementing it. After the US imposition of tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada, other countries including China have also announced to impose American retaliation. Experts say that this situation is in India’s interest. The US imposing high charges on China, Mexico and Canada will help Indian exporters increase their exports in the US market. Areas that can benefit include agriculture, engineering, machine equipment, apparel, cloth, chemicals and leather.

Chance to repeat history

India was the fourth largest beneficiary when the US imposed a high fee on Chinese goods during the first term of US President Donald Trump. The Trump administration is levying a 25 percent fee on Mexico and Canada and it has come into effect from Tuesday. The US has doubled the duty on all imports from China to 20 percent. “This can help Indian exporters in areas such as agriculture, engineering, machine equipment, apparel, cloth, chemicals and leather, nominated president of the federation of Indian export organizations (Fio).” The fee will affect exports from China, Mexico and Canada to the US as this will increase the prices of their products in the US market, making them less competitive. He said, “Indian exporters will have to take advantage of these opportunities.”

Will help attract investment

The Economic Research Institute Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) also said that the increase in trade war is expected to help India to increase its exports and attract investment from American companies. It states that high fees on Chinese products provide an opportunity for India to strengthen their manufacturing sector. GTRI founder Ajay Srivastava said that Trump was dissatisfied with its terms and during his first term, replaced it with USMCA (US-Mexico-Canada FTA) in 2018-19. He claimed that NAFTA was old and is harming American workers. Srivastava said, “Now, he is again unhappy with his own move and has imposed a 25 percent fee on Canada and Mexico from today, which is a violation of the terms of USMCA. This highlights his neglect of business agreements made through dialogue.

India will have to work wisely

To avoid a similar situation, India should be careful in talking to the US on a comprehensive FTA. ” He said, “Even the worse thing is that the US can not only demand a fee cut from India at the table of talks, but can also demand additional concessions, such as opening government procurement, reducing agricultural subsidy, weakening patent security and allowing unrestricted data flow. However, India has been opposing these demands for decades. ” Srivastava said that “instead of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA), India can offer a ‘zero-zero fee’ agreement to the US by proposing to abolish the fee on most industrial products from the US, provided the US should do the same for Indian goods.”
