India will cooperate in development of Mauritius, including the construction of Parliament House. On the second day of his visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced and inaugurated several projects along with modernization of 100 km long water pipeline in this island country. The two countries, expanding their strategic relations, signed 8 agreements to increase cooperation in many areas including trade and maritime security. These include promoting the use of national currencies for border cross transactions, sharing marine data, joint work in dealing with money laundering and increasing cooperation in MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises).

On the second and last day of his two -day visit to Port Louis, Modi attended Mauritius’ National Day celebrations as the chief guest. After talks with Mauritius Prime Minister Naveen Chandra Ramgulam, Modi announced India’s new approach for ‘Global South’ and named it mutual and overall advancement for security and development in the oceans or regions.

This policy approach has come under the backdrop of China’s untiring efforts to expand its influence in the Indian Ocean. Modi said that an independent, free, safe and protected Indian Ocean is a common priority of India and Mauritius. He and Ramgulam agreed that defense cooperation and maritime security is an important part of strategic partnership between the two countries. The Prime Minister said in his media statement, “We are committed to providing full support in the security of the special economic field of Mauritius.”

The Prime Minister also announced several development projects to be implemented in Mauritius with the help of India. He said that the work of modernization of 100 km long water pipeline will be done. The Prime Minister said that in the second phase of community development projects, new projects worth Rs 50 crore Mauritius will be started.

He also referred to various projects aided from India in Mauritius, including ‘Metro Express for speed in Mauritius, Supreme Court Building for Justice, Social Housing for Better Housing, ENT Hospital for Good Health,’ UPI ‘(Unified Payment Interface) and RuPay cards to promote business and tourism. Modi and Ramgulam also dedicated ‘Atal Bihari Vajpayee Public Service and Innovation Institute’ to Mauritius.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief guest on Wednesday on the occasion of National Day of Mauritius. Prime Minister Modi was also honored with Mauritius’s highest National Award ‘The Grand Commander of Star and Ki of Indian Ocean’. After a two -day visit, Prime Minister Modi left for New Delhi on Wednesday.
