Currently soldiers wear ECWCS uniform.

Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) launched new uniform for the soldiers deployed in severe cold at Siachen and Ladakh border. It has been named Himkavach. The uniform has passed all testing. The snow shield is designed to operate in temperatures ranging from 20°C to -60°C.

According to media reports, Himkavach is a clothing system which has been prepared by combining several layers of dresses. All the layers are designed according to the insulation system to generate heat. Breathing capacity and comfort have also been taken care of in these layers. The snow cover system is designed modularly. Due to which the soldiers can remove and add layers according to the weather.

Uniforms made from Himkavch Clothing System launched by DRDO.

Currently soldiers wear ECWCS uniform Currently, in minus degrees, soldiers deployed on the border wear uniforms made of three-layer Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS). It was developed by DRDO’s Defense Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIFAS).

The ECWCS uniform provides insulation and waterproofing to soldiers, but is not effective in extremely cold places like Siachen. At the same time, Himkwach is quite updated with ECWCS, which will now make it easier for the soldiers to maintain the border in cold weather.

Siachen Glacier is one of the most dangerous war zones not only in the country but also in the world.

Dead body of soldier found safe even after 56 years Siachen Glacier is one of the most dangerous war zones not only in the country but in the world. Indian soldiers are deployed here even in the blood-freezing cold. In all the Indian Army posts in the Himalayas, including Siachen, the conditions there are deadly for common people. In such a situation, soldiers are given special training before sending them to these places.

About 3 months ago, the body of Indian Army soldier Malkhan Singh was recovered from Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh. The special thing is that he died in a plane crash 56 years ago on February 7, 1968. Due to the severe cold, his body was safe even after five decades. Read the full news…

3 reasons why cold places like Siachen are deadly 1. Extreme cold: The temperature in Siachen Glacier remains below zero throughout the year. It fluctuates between -20°C to -60°C. Snow storms are common here.

2. High Height: The Siachen Glacier is part of the Karakoram Range of the Himalayan Mountains. Its height is about 20 to 23 thousand feet above sea level. It is challenging for humans to survive at this altitude.

One cannot survive by suddenly going to such a height without adjusting the body according to the environment here. American journalist Barry Barak says about this place – This is a place where rifles should be melted and machine guns should be boiled in boiling water.

3. Lack of oxygen: Due to high altitude the air pressure decreases here. Due to this low pressure the density of air decreases. In this less dense air the oxygen pressure obviously decreases.

In such a situation, less amount of oxygen reaches the body during breathing than required. Due to this the amount of oxygen in the blood starts decreasing. This condition is fatal for any human being.

Soldiers are given special training before sending them to these places.

Soldiers deployed in Siachen face sleeplessness and memory loss Siachen Glacier is surrounded by Pakistan and China on three sides. Indian soldiers monitor the border 24 hours a day, even in bad weather. Earlier there was no army deployment here, but after the infiltration of Pakistan in 1984, India took back the world’s highest and coldest battlefield through ‘Operation Medhdoot’.

  • Siachen is the largest glacier on earth apart from the Polar Region.
  • Here, it is most difficult for the Army to monitor the 75 KM border with China-Pakistan.
  • Soldiers live here in special igloo clothes. Soldiers bathe only once a month.
  • Soldiers here suffer from diseases like hypoxia and high altitude.
  • Weight starts decreasing. Loss of appetite, insomnia. There is also a risk of memory loss.
