Ajinkya Rahane Kolkata Knight Riders New Captain: Defending champion Kolkata Knight Riders have appointed Ajinkya Rahane as their new captain for IPL 2025. Ajinkya Rahane will replace Shreyas Iyer, whose franchise led by the franchise won the IPL 2024 title. However, Kolkata did not retain Iyer for IPL 2025, after which Kolkata needed the captain. Kolkata spent 23.75 crores for Venkatesh Iyer at the auction, and he has been made the deputy of Rahane by the franchise. Let me tell you, Kolkata will start the IPL 2025 campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens on 22 March.
In the auction of the players for IPL 2025, no one had bid on Ajinkya Rahane in the initial round. However, in the accelerated round, Kolkata Knight Riders bought Rahane for his base price of 1.50 crores. The previous season was not good for Rahane and he scored 242 runs in 13 innings. But after selling in the IPL auction, there has been a tremendous change in Rahane’s performance.
Ajinkya Rahane recently played an important role in getting Mumbai the title of Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament. Rahane scored 469 runs at an average of 58.62 and a great strike rate of 164.56. He was the highest run -scorer in the tournament.
On becoming the captain of Kolkata, Rahane said, “It is an honor to lead KKR, which is one of the most successful franchisees in the IPL. I think we have a great and balanced team. I am eager to work with everyone and to accept the challenge of protecting my title.”
This will be the second time when Rahane will be seen playing for Kolkata. Kolkata bought Rahane before the 2022 season. That year he got a chance to play in only seven matches, in which he could only score 133 runs. The next season, he went to Chennai Super Kings, where he scored 326 runs at a strike rate of 172.49. This year Chennai won the title and Rahane performed brilliantly as a top order bat throughout the tournament.
Ajinkya Rahane also has the experience of captaincy in the IPL. Rahane has been playing since 2008. He led Rising Pune Giants in a match in the 2017 season. After this he was the captain of Rajasthan Royals in the next season. In the 2019 season, in the middle of the tournament, the Rajasthan franchise replaced Steve Smith as captain.
