Job stress it and media sector: According to a new survey by Kerala State Youth Commission, young professionals working in media and IT industries are experiencing a worrying level of job stress. According to the survey, 83.5% media professionals and 84.3% IT employees feel too much stress on work. Survey data showed that employees working in banking and insurance (80.6%) and gig economy (75.5%) are much more stressed than other sectors, while stress levels in employees in retail and industrial areas are relatively lower.
People aged 18-40 are the most stressed
The survey consisted of answers to 1,548 employees in the age group of 18-40 in five regions, which found that individuals in the age group of 30–39 face the highest levels of job stress. Women reported a slightly higher stress level (74.7%) than men (73.7%). An important majority, about 68.25% said that their work-life balance has been affected due to the pressure of the workload.
Issues of financial insecurity and work-life balance are associated with mental and physical stress among these professionals. The survey also found that discrimination at the workplace, a general stress for non-binary employees, can also be a factor, while low salary and poor benefits are significant stress for male employees.

The youth have suggested many measures to the Commission to address these issues. These include establishing entertaining places to provide relief from stress at workplaces, appointing mental health officials by big companies to look into issues such as mental and psychological stress and implement government models for small businesses. Additionally, Mental Health Insurance has been suggested to be made a compulsory part of employee benefits to cover therapy, counseling and mental care.
The Commission said in the report that a national seminar will be held here on March 3 and 4 on the topic ‘Mental health of modern work and youth’, in which the findings of the survey will be discussed and strategies will be searched to promote better mental health between young professionals and create a supporting work environment.
