In many cases of sexual abuse of children in Kerala, their families are the culprits. Recently, a Kerala court sentenced a case where a father forcibly raped his 13-year-old daughter for several months and made her pregnant and fled to the Gulf country.

The girl’s mother initially supported her but later she also joined her husband. This victim also had to go through miscarriage and mental stress. In this case, the court sentenced the guilty father to two life sentences and also imposed a fine of lakhs.

In many cases, incidents of sexual harassment and rape of minors also come to light through tuition, colleges and other educational institutions. Law and order has continuously deteriorated under the leftist government. A report shows that not only minor girls but also boys are becoming victims of sexual harassment.

Such incidents are also happening with the children of migrants in Kerala. In a similar case in July 2023, a young man named Ashfaq Alam had kidnapped a girl, raped her, murdered her and threw the body in a drain.

Increase in other crimes against children also

Not only sexual harassment of children but also other crimes in Kerala edge Has happened. According to SCRB data, a total of 2879 crimes against children were committed in Kerala in 2016. By 2024, their number had reached 4727.

In 2016, there were 154 incidents of kidnapping or abduction of minors within Kerala. This number reached 260 by 2019. This figure has come down slightly in 2024. Between 2016-24, 1793 cases of child kidnapping have been reported in the state.

Rape cases are also increasing continuously in Kerala.

The problem of rape has become so serious in Kerala that recently a report regarding the film industry here shocked everyone. After this report, allegations of sexual exploitation were leveled against names of Malayalam film industry. In these, many people including directors, actors and film producers were exposed.

This problem is not limited to just one section in Kerala. There have also been some cases where people associated with the ruling party carried out incidents like rape. This is not the only problem in Kerala. According to statistics, between 2016-2024, more than 39 thousand cases of molestation were reported in the state.

What did the Kerala Child Protection Commission say?

The Kerala Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KESCPCR) looks at the increasing cases of sexual abuse of children from a different perspective. Commission member N Sunanda, while speaking to OpIndia, claimed that the reporting of POCSO cases has increased rapidly in the state.

He said that it is necessary to report the cases under POCSO and we are implementing this, that is why the cases are increasing. He also claimed that cases of minors running away from home also come to POCSO, hence this also increases the figure.

N Sunanda said that nowadays people are using this law in family disputes also, this could also be a reason for the increase in the number. On what the Commission is doing to reduce these cases, he said that they are preparing a database of children and families who may be victims of sexual crimes.

His stand is not supported by Nivedita Subramaniam, head of State Mahila Morcha of the state’s opposition party BJP. Speaking to OpIndia, Subramaniam said that if the systems are so good then why are heinous cases coming up continuously. He also alleged that in such cases only those people are heard who are close to the ruling communists.

He also raised the question that if more cases are coming to light due to good reporting, then what action is being taken in them and how many people are being sent to jail. Nivedita Subramaniam also alleged that in cases where people associated with the Communist Party are accused, pressure for compromise is created.
