Let us know which films made money at the box office this year and which films could not even recover their costs. Urmila Kori’s special report on Bollywood’s annual accounts.

horror comedy boom

It would not be wrong to say that this year has been in the name of horror-comedy films. Among the few superhit films of this year, two names are from the horror comedy genre. Amar Kaushik directed film ‘Stree 2’ emerged as the biggest hit Hindi film of this year. The film has earned a whopping Rs 605.8 crore at the Indian box office. At the same time, the film has collected around Rs 840 crore worldwide. The second biggest hit film of this year was Kartik Aryan, Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit starrer ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’. The film earned Rs 268.20 crore, while it earned Rs 405 crore 41 lakh worldwide. People liked the horror-comedy genre so much this year that ‘Munjya’, made with a budget of Rs 30 crore and starring young faces like Sharvari and Abhay Verma, also touched the earning figure of Rs 105.3 crore at the ticket window. Horror genre was also liked by the audience. Not only horror-comedy, people also liked horror genre this year. The remake of Ajay Devgan and Madhavan starrer Gujarati film ‘Shaitan’ has included itself in the list of superhit films by earning Rs 150.1 crore at the ticket window. Not only this, the horror film ‘Tumbbad’, which was released again this year, was successful in scaring people more this time. This film was released along with Kareena Kapoor’s ‘The Buckingham Murders’, but instead of that film, the re-released horror film ‘Tumbbad’ was liked by the people. This time the film earned Rs 40.6 crores, whereas when the film was released earlier, it had earned only Rs 27.1 crores.

Dominance of South films continues

For the last two years, Bollywood seemed to be winning the battle lost by South cinema at the ticket window, but ‘Pushpa 2 The Rule’ has once again won the name of South films. Pushpa 2’s Aandhi in the fourth week of the film Still intact after release.1157. The film has earned Rs 35 crore so far in India. By the way, the name of the science fiction film ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ inspired by Hindu mythology is also included in the South films appreciated at the box office this year. With its star cast including Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Deepika Padukone, the film managed to enthrall the audience with its gorgeous visuals and intense story. Earlier, along with these films released in the month of January, the name of the film ‘Hanuman’ was much talked about in the beginning of the year. Made with a budget of Rs 40 crore, this film recovered 6 times its total cost at the box office. The cinematic universe of director Prashant Verma has started with this film.

The magic of biopic was ineffective

The discussion about the biopic film ’12th Fail’ of the year 2023 has not stopped yet. This year too, many biopic films and films based on real events hit the box office, but this year biopic films have been rejected by the audience. It would not be wrong to say this. Syed Abdul Rahim’s Ajay Devgan starrer biopic ‘Maidan’ was a big budget film of Rs 250 crore, but could only collect 63.4% at the Indian box office. Ajay Devgan’s film ‘Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha’ was based on a real incident and the condition of this film was worse at the box office. The film, made with a budget of Rs 100 crore, could earn only Rs 13.6 crore at the Indian box office. Like Ajay, Akshay Kumar’s biographical drama film ‘Sarfira’ also had the same fate at the box office. The film earned only Rs 29.41, while the budget was more than Rs 80 crore. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Bajpayee’s Pankaj Tripathi starrer film ‘Main Atal Hoon’ could not earn even Rs 10 crore at the Indian box office, whereas the budget of the film was Rs 20 crore. Karthik Aryan’s story ‘Chandu Champion’ written by Muralidhar Petkar, who created history in Paralympics, also could not connect with the audience. The budget of the film was 150 crores, while the film could only reach the figure of 87.25 crores in worldwide collection. Among the biopic films, Rajkumar Rao’s Srikanth was the only one liked by the audience. Made with a budget of Rs 35 crore, it earned Rs 47.94 crore in India alone.

These films proved that ‘name is big and philosophy is small’

Big stars, big budget, but the film still could not attract the audience. There are many names in this list, the first name of which is Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff’s film ‘Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan’. The budget of the film was Rs 350 crore, while the film earned only Rs 64.70 at the ticket window. Rohit Shetty’s ‘Singham Again’ starring more than half a dozen superstars has earned Rs 250 crore at the ticket window, but the industry is not ready to accept this film as a hit, leave alone a superhit, because the budget of the film is Rs 400 crores. Was close. Alia Bhatt’s action film ‘Jigra’ also could not perform well at the ticket window. The budget of the film was Rs 100 crore, while the film could only reach the figure of 56.93 in the world wide collection. Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2, made with a budget of Rs 250, earned only Rs 150 at the box office worldwide. Junior NTR’s film Devra Part One also had a bad fate at the box office. On December 25, Varun Dhawan starrer Baby John was discussed a lot, but the film did not even ask for water at the ticket window. The name of South’s star director Atlee was also associated with the film, who was the presenter of the film.
