What is fecal coliform
According to CPCB, the acceptable amount of fecal (stool) coliform in a water is 2,500 units in 100 ml. Water is considered polluted when it is found more than this. The stool coliform bacteria is a group of microorganisms found in the intestines of humans and animals. Their presence in water is a sign of pollution from sewage or animal waste in water. Not all coliform bacteria are harmful. If stool coliform is found in a water, then the possibility of presence of dangerous pathogen like virus, Salmonella and E. coli increases.
