A powerful earthquake of 7.3 magnitude occurred off the coast of Vanuatu on Tuesday. Due to this there has been a lot of destruction there. At least six people have reportedly died. Injured people are reaching the hospital. The US Embassy is also one of the seriously damaged buildings in the capital of Port Vila. The tsunami warning was lifted less than two hours after the earthquake. Even after hours, communication facilities are not being restored. Know here about the world’s top 10 earthquakes…
10 – Indian Ocean, 2012
The Indonesian province of Aceh is no stranger to seismic activity, but on April 11, 2012, a massive 8.6 M earthquake was recorded 610 km off the coast of Banda Aceh. After this another 8.2 MW was recorded. These earthquakes caused mass panic, causing frightened people to flee coastal areas.
9 – Aleutian Islands, USA, 1946
The Aleutian Islands are located in the North Pacific Ocean between Alaska (USA) and the Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia). In April 1946, an 8.6 M earthquake caused a massive tsunami traveling at 800 km/h in the Pacific Ocean, causing widespread devastation. This huge wave reached the Hawaiian Islands only 5 hours after the earthquake, covering a distance of more than 3,900 km. In this, 159 people were killed and many buildings were leveled.
8 – Assam, India, 1950
The strongest earthquake recorded on land occurred between Assam and Tibet in India, with its epicenter located in the Mishmi Hills of northeastern India. This huge earthquake was caused by the collision of two continental plates (Indian Plate and Eurasian Plate). In Tibet, this 8.6 M earthquake caused massive landslides and land cracks, and many villages were washed away by rivers. Meanwhile, a large amount of damage was also experienced in India. Here 70 villages were destroyed due to landslides and collapse of natural dams. It is estimated that approximately 4,800 people were killed by the incident, of which more than 1,500 were in India and 3,300 in Tibet.
7 – Rat Island, USA, 1965
The Rat Islands are part of a chain of volcanic islands known collectively as the Aleutian Islands. These islands lie on the boundary between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates, and as a result, experience a lot of earthquake activity. In 1965, an earthquake on Rat Island caused a tsunami wave up to 10 meters high on Shemya Island, 304 km away. Even in Hawaii, United States, the resulting tsunami wave generated by the Rat Island earthquake reached 4,200 meters in height despite being 1 km away from the epicenter.
6 – Chile, 2010
A magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of central Chile in the early hours of February 27, 2010, near the coastal city of Concepcion. The strong tremors of the earthquake were felt for about three minutes and were felt up to 4,620 kilometers away from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Concepcion has a long history with earthquakes. In 1939, large parts of the city were destroyed by a powerful shockwave and 28,000 people lost their lives. The city was then subjected to further major earthquakes in 1953 and 1960, again causing significant damage and loss of life. Because the 2010 earthquake was so large and caused an undersea rupture, tsunami warnings were issued for a total of 53 countries. The wave that started reached both Japan and the California coast in the United States.
5 – Severo-Kurilsk, Russia, 1952
Russia’s Severo-Kurilsk Kuril Islands are a small volcanic archipelago 1,300 km north-east of Japan. Nearly half the population of this small town was wiped out in 1952. After this disaster, the town was rebuilt on higher ground. To date, it is still the largest earthquake recorded in Russia.
4 – Tohoku, Japan, 2011
The Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami occurred on March 11, 2011, and is the largest earthquake ever to hit Japan.
3 – Sumatra, Indonesia, 2004
The 9.1 Mw earthquake in Sumatra was centuries in the making. The deadly wave hit coastal areas in 14 countries, including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand, killing an estimated 228,000 people. It is the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Asia, and the worst natural disaster of the 21st century.
2 – Alaska, USA, 1964
The Alaska earthquake of 1964 remains the second most powerful recorded earthquake in history and the most powerful earthquake in American history.
1 – Valdivia, Chile, 1960
The largest earthquake ever occurred in 1960 near the city of Valdivia in Chile. With a magnitude of 9.5, it was one of the deadliest earthquakes in history, killing an estimated 5,700 people.
