Meta India on Wednesday apologized for its Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg’s remarks in which he had said that India’s current government had lost the 2024 elections. Meta India has called it an “inadvertent mistake”. A day earlier, on Zuckerberg’s statement, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey had said that the committee will summon Meta officials.

Shivnath Thukral, vice president of Meta India, wrote on He said, “We apologize for this unintentional mistake. India remains an important country for META and we look forward to being at the center of its innovative future.”

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had earlier criticized Zuckerberg’s comments on the Joe Rogan podcast. Vaishnav, Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Information Technology (IT), had said in a post on The minister had dismissed Zuckerberg’s comments as misinformation, and clarified that Meta has to maintain facts and credibility.

On Zuckerberg’s statement, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, had said on Tuesday that the committee will summon Meta officials. Dubey said in a post on ‘X’, “My committee will summon officials of Meta (a company owned by Facebook) for misinformation. Misinformation about any democratic country tarnishes the image of the country. That institution will have to apologize to the Indian Parliament and the people for this mistake.

In fact, recently Facebook founder and Meta CEO Zuckerberg participated in ‘Joe Rogan Podcast’. During this time he had made a controversial comment on India’s elections. The CEO of Meta had said that after the Covid-19 pandemic, elections were held in many countries of the world including India and many governments, including India, have lost. He had said that these defeats show that people’s confidence has decreased after the pandemic. Obviously this comment of Zuckerberg regarding India is wrong. NDA under the leadership of Modi won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in India and formed the government for the third consecutive time.
