Meta India, the Indian unit of social media platform parent company Meta, on Wednesday apologized for CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s comments on India’s elections during his podcast. In this comment, Zuckerberg had said that the current government in India will lose power in the 2024 elections. Meta India called it an unintentional mistake. According to PTI news, Meta India Vice President Shivnath Thukral apologized and expressed his views in a post on social media platform X.
Apologized in X post
According to the news, Meta India Vice President Thukral wrote that Dear Honorable Minister @AshwiniVaishnav, Mark’s observation that many existing parties were not re-elected in the 2024 elections is true for many countries, but not for India. We would like to apologize for this unintentional mistake. India remains an incredibly important country for @meta and we look forward to being at the center of its innovative future.
Ashwini Vaishnav had termed the comment as factually incorrect.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had earlier criticized the comments made by Zuckerberg on the Joe Rogan podcast. Vaishnav had said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on January 13 that Mr. Zuckerberg’s claim that most of the current governments, including India, have lost in the 2024 elections post-Covid, is factually incorrect. As the world’s largest democracy, India is set to conduct the 2024 elections with over 64 crore voters. The people of India reaffirmed their faith in NDA under the leadership of PM @narendramodi ji. The minister had dismissed Zuckerberg’s comments as misinformation, and made it clear that Meta must maintain facts and credibility.
Vaishnav enumerated the strength of India
Vaishnav said that from free food for 80 crore people, 2.2 billion free vaccines and assistance to countries around the world during Covid to propelling India as the fastest growing major economy, PM Modi’s decisive third term Bar’s victory is a proof of good governance and public trust. @Meta, it’s disappointing to see misinformation from Zuckerberg himself. Let’s maintain facts and credibility. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who heads Parliament’s standing committee on communications and information technology, had on Tuesday said the panel would summon the firm following its chairman’s comments that India’s ruling dispensation had lost the Lok Sabha elections last year.
Dubey said in a post on X that my committee will summon Meta for this misinformation. Misinformation about any democratic country tarnishes its image. This organization will have to apologize to the Indian Parliament and the people for this mistake.
