Devi Ahilyabai Holkar was born on 31 May 1725 in a village named Chaundi (Jamkhed, Ahmednagar) in Maharashtra state. She was the daughter of an ordinary farmer. His father Mankoji Shinde was a farmer. Ahilyabai used to worship in Shiva temple daily.
At the young age of 10, she got married to Khanderao, son of Malharrao Holkar, the founder of the Holkar dynasty. Along with many pilgrimage places, he also built temples, ghats, wells, stepwells, granaries and ponds for hungry people.
Also employed weavers to make sarees. Maheshwari sarees are manufactured here. In the year 1754, when Ahilyabai Holkar was just 21 years old, her husband Khanderao Holkar was martyred during the Battle of Kumbher.
Ahilyabai decided to commit Sati after the death of her husband, but her father-in-law Malhar Rao Holkar stopped her from doing so. Devi Ahilyabai died on 13 August 1795.
