Muslims increased by 1 lakh+ in a year, Hindus only 1099: Think tank caused the ‘Demography Change’ in Kerala, ahead of having children on a lower stake in the total population

In Kerala, the Muslim community with half a population of Hindus is producing the most children. This trend continues continuously. About 44% of children born in Kerala are Muslims. Hindus are around 41% in terms of having children even after they are twice in the population. On the other hand, the number of deaths among Muslims is much less than their population. Millions of new people are constantly joining Muslims every year. All these things have been revealed in a recent report. This report has been released by a think tank.

The Center for Policy Studies Think Tank released a report on January 30, 2025. The name of the report is Religius Demography in India: Rising Religious Embalance. In this report, data from 2008 to 2021 of the rest of the communities including Hindu, Muslim and Christians of Kerala have been researched. The report talks about the new births, deaths and impact on its population in these communities. The report has found that due to all the reasons, the Muslim population has increased rapidly within Kerala in the past.

Children are born in Muslims more than Hindus

CPS Having found in his analysis that most of the children within Kerala have been born in the Muslim community since 2016. In 2016, 2 lakh 7 thousand Hindu children were born in Kerala, while 2 lakh 11 thousand Muslim children were born during this period. The same situation remained in 2017 when 2 lakh 10 thousand 71 Hindu children were born but the number of Muslim children was 2 lakh 16 thousand 525. The same trend continued till 2020. Only 2021 was the year when the number of Hindu children was more. Understand this data from the graph below.

It is clear from this graph that since 2016 in Kerala, Hindus are constantly being born less. This is happening when the population of Hindus in the state is about 55% and Muslims have a population of 27%. If both the figures are combined together, it is known that despite being in half the population, Muslims are producing more children than Hindus. This change was coming slowly before 2016 when the number of Hindu children was continuously decreasing. Understand this data from this chart given by CPS.

It is clear in the chart that 45% of the children born in Kerala in 2008 were Hindus while 36% children were Muslims. The number of Christians was about 17.5%. But by 2020, the number of Hindu children in the total children born to 41.4% has come down to 41.4%, while during this time the share of Muslim children increased to 44%. Meanwhile, the share of Christians came down from about 18% to 14% in the total children.

Muslims grow 5 times faster than Hindus

The CPS report also reported that there has been a sharp decline in the total fertility rate (TFR) in Kerala in the last nearly 3 decades. A woman as a woman gives birth at the age of 15-49, she is called TFR. Its average is the TFR of the state. The average TFR should be 2.1 as the population of any community is, as much as it remains. According to a 2023 survey, the TFR of Muslims in Kerala is still 2.25 while it has reached 1.53 among Hindus.

The CPS report states that the difference of all these changes has been rapidly on the population of the state. CPS has found that Muslims have been growing fastest since 1950 in Kerala. Between 2001 and 2011, the population of Hindus in Kerala increased by only 2.23% and the population of Christians only 1.38%, while the Muslims increased by 12.8%. This trend is already operational.

The data of deaths is also more of Hindus

CPS has found in its analysis that while the share of Muslims among the children born between 2008-21 is much more than their population, this stake in the deaths in the state is less than their population. The CPS report states that Muslims have been around 20% of the deaths in Kerala between 2008 and 2021, which is much lower than 26.5% of their population. In contrast, the percentage of Hindus in deaths was about 60%. The number of deaths among Christians has been equal according to their population.

1 lakh+ Muslims are joining Kerala’s population every year

The CPS report states that every year the most people of Kerala population are joining the Muslim community. This figure CPS has prepared the difference between deaths every year in every community in Kerala and children born every year. According to the CPS, in the year 2021, 1 lakh 4 thousand people in the Muslim community are newly connected while the population of Hindus has increased only by 1099. The population of Christians has decreased by 6218.

According to the report, the number of increase in the population of Hindus is continuously decreasing. If this trend remains, then Hindu population will start decreasing in a few years. However, more than 1 lakh people in the Muslim population have been associated with 2008 consecutive people since 2008. The report states that between 2011-20, their share of population has increased from 26% to 29%. At the same time, the share of Hindus in the population of Kerala is decreasing. The report has been reported that this difference may increase further in the coming time.
