The Constitution of India, which is the longest written constitution in the world, took two years, eleven months and 18 days to make. This process took place on 9 December 1946. The first President of the country, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly and Dr. BR Ambedkar, who is considered the creator of the Constitution of India, was the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution. After the Mountbatten Plan and the separation of Pakistan, the representatives of the areas included in it were left out of it. Two months after it was formally accepted by the Constituent Assembly, on 26 January 1950. The country adopted the Constitution and India was declared a sovereign, democratic republic. The Indian Constitution is the longest written constitution in the world. No country has a bigger constitution than this. But the list of its special features is much longer than this. Our Constitution is not an inert constitution but a living constitution which keeps changing with the needs of the times. However, its basic spirit has not been tampered with. When the country adopted the Constitution on January 26, 1950, it had 22 parts, which till date has become 25 after 106 different amendments. There were 395 articles in the original Constitution which have now become 448 after the amendments and there were 8 schedules which have now become 12 after all the amendments. The special thing is that all the parts, articles and schedules of the Constitution were hand written and Decorated with hand drawn photographs.

That is why our Constitution is also called the most beautiful Constitution of the world. Although it would have been very easy to get the Constitution printed in a printing press after it was ready, but it is believed that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wanted the original copies of the Constitution to be available. After much deliberation, calligrapher Prem Bihari Narayan Raizada, who studied at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, was contacted for this work.

Raizada, who had learned the art of calligraphy from his grandfather, immediately agreed to this. He did not take a single penny for this work but only requested that at the end of every page, along with his name, the name of his guru and grandfather Master Ram Prasad Saxena should be written. He was given a room in the Constituent Assembly where he completed this work in six months. This room was later called the Constitution Club. In writing the 251-page Constitution, he took the help of England and Czechoslovakia. 303 nibs were used. The responsibility of writing the Constitution in Hindi was given to another calligrapher, calligrapher Vasant Krishna Vaidya. The paper on which the Constitution was written was made at the Handmade Paper Research Center in Pune.

The original Constitution was not only handwritten but also decorated with beautiful hand-drawn pictures. How to decorate the Constitution was all decided in Shantiniketan. Where painter Nandlal Bose and his team executed this work very well after careful consideration. Nandlal Bose was closely associated with the freedom struggle and had also prepared posters for the Congress sessions. In October 1949, when the final session of the Constituent Assembly was about to begin and the date of 26 November 1949 was approaching, the day When the draft of the Constitution was to be signed, Nand Lal Bose was given the big responsibility of decorating the Constitution, time was short. Fellow artists included Kripal Singh Shekhawat, A Perumal and Dhirendrakrishna Deb Burman.

Paintings were made on different pages of the Constitution which narrate the story of different periods of India’s 5000 years of history. Pictures showing everything from the Indus Valley Civilization to the fight for independence were recorded on the pages of the Constitution. Not only this, The pages also include different scenes related to the Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. The pages of the Constitution also put the geography of India on paper. Everything from strolling to the great heights of the Himalayas is recorded in it. The sketch of the most special page of the Constitution, its Preamble, was prepared by B. Ram Manohar Sinha. He prepared it with very fine flowery patterns. Dinanath Bhargava prepared the sketch of the Constitution. But prepared the sketch of the national symbol, the Lion Pillar of Emperor Ashoka.

The work of decorating the pages of the Constitution with pictures was also very complicated. It was a long plan which was changed several times.
