New Delhi Assembly seat: Why has it become a hot seat, what is the relationship of this seat with the CM’s chair?

New Delhi:

Aam Aadmi Party’s national convenor Arvind Kajriwal has filed his nomination. He is contesting from New Delhi Assembly seat. BJP has fielded its former MP Pravesh Verma from this seat. Verma also filed his nomination today itself. This time in the elections, Congress has fielded its former MP Sandeep Dixit from this seat. Due to these three candidates, this seat has become the hottest seat of Delhi. The reason for this is that the person who won from this seat in six out of the last seven elections has become the CM of Delhi. That’s why everyone’s eyes are on this seat.

Who is the contest for New Delhi seat?

This time the main contest on this seat is being considered between Arvind Kejriwal, Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma and Sandeep Dixit. The similarity between these three is that on one hand Kejriwal has been the Chief Minister of Delhi, while on the other hand the father and mother of Verma and Dixit have been the Chief Ministers of Delhi. Verma is the son of senior BJP leader Sahib Singh Verma. He is the son of Sheila Dikshit, who was the Chief Minister of Delhi three times. Both Verma and Dixit have been Lok Sabha MPs. BJP has been able to win this seat only once. In the 1993 elections, Kirti Jha Azad, who came to politics from the cricket field, was elected MLA from this seat. He is the son of former Chief Minister of Bihar Bhagwat Jha Azad. Presently he is the Trinamool Congress MP from Burdwan Durgapur Lok Sabha seat of West Bengal.

In the first assembly elections held in 1993 after Delhi became a union territory with an assembly, there was no New Delhi assembly seat. Today’s New Delhi Assembly seat was earlier under Gol Market Assembly seat. New Delhi Assembly seat came into existence after delimitation in the year 2008. It was an interesting coincidence in Delhi politics that the party whose candidate won from Gol Market Assembly seat and New Delhi Assembly seat formed the government in Delhi. This is the reason why in 1993, BJP and in 1998, 2003 and 2008, Congress government was formed in the state under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit. Whereas in 2013, 2015 and 2020, Aam Aadmi Party government was formed in Delhi under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal. Therefore, this time also people’s eyes are on New Delhi Assembly seat.

Arvind Kejriwal’s hat-trick of victory

There are most of the government colonies in this assembly seat. Therefore, the voters of this seat are considered educated voters. He easily recognizes the wave and votes. This time, Aam Aadmi Party candidate Arvind Kejriwal has won the election from this seat thrice. In the 2013 elections, Kejriwal defeated Congress’s Sheila Dikshit by a margin of 25 thousand 864 votes. In the 2015 elections, he defeated BJP’s Nupur Sharma by a margin of 31 thousand 583 votes, while in the 2020 elections, he defeated BJP’s Sunil Yadav by a margin of 21 thousand 697 votes.

Looking at the way BJP and Congress have fielded candidates this time, it seems that this time Arvind Kejriwal will have to face a tough competition on this seat. The reason for this is that the Aam Aadmi Party, which was born from the womb of anti-corruption movement, is surrounded by allegations of corruption. Arvind Kejriwal also had to go to jail on corruption charges. He has been released from jail on conditional bail granted by the Supreme Court. In Delhi, BJP and Congress are cornering Aam Aadmi Party in the name of corruption and poor condition of Delhi.

Who are the candidates of BJP and Congress on New Delhi seat?

BJP candidate Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma is a flamboyant leader of BJP in Delhi. He was elected MP from West Delhi seat in 2014. He is a leader with a Hindutva image. Pravesh Verma has also been an MLA. He defeated AAP’s Yogendra Shastri in the 2013 assembly elections. The Congress candidate has been MP from East Delhi Lok Sabha seat twice. He is contesting the elections with his demand for the development work done in Sheila Dikshit’s government.

Since the announcement of his candidature, he has cornered the Aam Aadmi Party on many issues. He has also gone to the Lieutenant Governor with the complaint of Aam Aadmi Party. Whereas Aam Aadmi Party says that Congress and BJP have made an agreement to defeat it. Looking at this round of allegations and counter-allegations, it seems that this time there will be a tough contest on the New Delhi Assembly seat. To know who will win in this, we will have to wait till February 8, when the results will come.
