Nitish is the only Indian to score a century at number-8 in Australia: 21-year-old Reddy’s first century, made a second big partnership with Sundar; Records

India has made a comeback in the match with the help of Nitish Reddy’s century on the third day of Melbourne Test. Till stumps the team’s score is 358 runs losing 9 wickets. Nitish returned unbeaten after scoring 105 runs. However, the team is still behind by 116 runs.

Saturday was a record day in the name of Nitish. He became the only Indian batsman to score a century by landing at number-8 in Australia. Reddy and Washington Sundar made the second highest partnership in Australia for the eighth wicket.

Facts:

  • Nitish came to bat at number 8. He is the first Indian batsman to score a century for India in Australia. Also, this is the best score (105* runs) for a batsman ranked number 8 or below in Test matches played in Melbourne. In 1902, Australian Reggie Duff had scored 104 runs while batting at number 10.
  • Reddy became the second Indian batsman to score his maiden Test century in Melbourne. Apart from Nitish, Vinoo Mankad had scored a century in 1948.
  • Reddy has hit 8 sixes so far in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. He jointly ranks first in the list of most sixes hit in a series against Australia. Michael Vaughan in the 2002-03 Ashes and Chris Gayle in 2009 also hit eight sixes each.

1. Youngest Indian to score a century in Australia Nitish Reddy is the third youngest batsman to score a century in Australia. The 21 years 214 days old batsman scored the first century of his career. He is the third youngest Indian player to score a Test century in Australia after Tendulkar (18 years 253 days) and Rishabh Pant (21 years 91 days).

2. Second highest partnership for the 8th wicket in Australia There was a partnership of 127 runs between Reddy and Washington Sundar for the eighth wicket. This is the second highest partnership for the eighth wicket in Australia. Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh are at number one in the list. Both of them had made a partnership of 129 runs in the 2008 Sydney Test. The 140-run partnership between MS Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the ninth wicket in the 2013 Chennai Test is the highest partnership for India in the lower order.

3. Third highest partnership for the 8th wicket outside India Washington Sundar and Reddy have become the players with the third biggest partnership outside India. At number one, Rahul Dravid and Javagal Srinath had added 144 runs against New Zealand in 1999.

4. Highest score by number-9 batsman in Australia Washington Sundar scored 50 runs while batting at number 9 for India in Australia. This is the fourth highest score at this position. The first place in the list is wicketkeeper Kiran More, who scored unbeaten 67 runs in Melbourne itself.
