State Bureau, Naiduniya: Bhopal. There was peace in Pithampur on Sunday after two days of uproar in Pithampur of Dhar district in protest against the destruction of Union Carbide’s waste 40 years after the Bhopal gas tragedy. However, the police administration is alert and police forces have been deployed in the streets and localities.
At the same time, prohibitory order is in force within a radius of 100 meters of the plant. The Divisional Commissioner, Collector and Superintendent of Police are taking stock of the situation in the force. On Monday, the state government has to present the compliance report so far on the disposal of waste in the main bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur.
Government will give reasons in High Court
Preparations for this have been made at the government level. However, due to the protests, the government will also explain in the High Court the reason for not disposal of waste in Pithampur till now. Keeping the situation informed, an advance order will be requested from the High Court, say government level officials.
Protest due to fear of loss of life
Let us tell you that the people of Pithampur are protesting expressing the fear of loss of life due to chemical waste. However, the state government is constantly assuring them that the decision to dispose of the waste has been taken keeping in mind all aspects under the supervision of experts.
no harm to climate
Experts have satisfied that destroying the waste will not cause any harm to the climate. However, the people of Pithampur are adamant on the demand of taking the waste somewhere else and destroying it. This is the reason why all the 12 containers carrying 337 tonnes of waste from Bhopal have been standing for four days at the plant in Pithampur, where the decision has been taken to destroy the waste.
To prevent garbage from entering the plant, the agitators kept the entire Pithampur closed on Friday. Protested violently. Jammed. Stones were pelted and two BJP workers tried to commit suicide by setting themselves on fire. On Saturday also, the agitators created ruckus and pelted stones at the plant.
All eyes on today’s stand of the High Court
On Monday, the state government will submit a compliance report to the Jabalpur main bench of the High Court regarding the actual status of disposal of waste by Bhopal-based Union Carbide.
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, Chief Secretary Anurag Jain and other officials are saying that the High Court will also be informed about the protest in Pithampur and directions will be sought regarding further steps. Further steps will be taken on that basis. In such a situation, everyone’s eyes are on the stand of the High Court on Monday.
Instructions to Principal Secretary
Let us tell you that in December, the double bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Vivek Jain had given instructions to the state government to remove the toxic waste of the Union Carbide complex within a month. Along with this, it was also warned that if the concerned department fails to follow the order, contempt action will be taken against its Principal Secretary.
It was also instructed that the Chief Secretary of the state and the Principal Secretary of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department will have to appear in person and give an explanation. In compliance with this order, the government has taken action for disposal of garbage.
