Seoul: South Korea’s main opposition party on Wednesday asked President Yoon Suk-yeol to resign or face impeachment. Yun had abolished martial law some time ago. MPs voted in favor of lifting martial law. Yoon did not immediately respond to the opposition’s demand, but his office said Yoon’s senior advisers and secretaries have offered to resign en masse and the president has also postponed his official scheduled Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday night, Yun suddenly imposed martial law. The martial law imposed by the President remained in effect for only six hours, as the National Assembly voted to reject the President’s decision. This declaration (martial law) was formally lifted around 4:30 in the morning during a cabinet meeting. The opposition Democratic Party holds a majority in the 300-seat parliament. The party said Wednesday that its lawmakers have asked Yoon to step down immediately, otherwise they will take steps to impeach him.

“President Yoon Suk-yeol’s declaration of martial law is a violation of the Constitution,” the Democratic Party said in a statement. “His declaration of martial law is fundamentally invalid and a serious violation of the Constitution,” the statement said. This was a serious act of rebellion and provides perfect grounds for his impeachment.”

However, impeachment of the President would require the support of two-thirds of the Parliament or 200 out of 300 members. According to National Assembly officials, the Democratic Party and other smaller opposition parties have a total of 192 seats. But when parliament rejected Yun’s martial law declaration by a 190-0 vote, about 10 lawmakers from Yun’s ruling ‘People’s Power Party’ also voted in support of the opposition. If Yun is impeached, he would be stripped of his constitutional powers pending a ruling by the Constitutional Court. Prime Minister Han Dak-soo, who holds the second position in the South Korean government, will assume the responsibilities of the presidency. (AP)
