This tunnel is built at a height of 2600 meters i.e. 8652 feet above sea level.
Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the Z Mod Tunnel in Ganderbal, Jammu and Kashmir at 11:45 am on Monday. The 6.4 km long double lane tunnel built on Srinagar-Leh Highway NH-1 will connect Srinagar to Sonamarg. Due to snowfall this highway remains closed for 6 months. With the construction of the tunnel, people will get all-weather connectivity.
Earlier it used to take more than 1 hour between Gagangir to Sonamarg on Srinagar-Leh Highway. Due to this tunnel, this distance can now be covered in 15 minutes. Apart from this, the speed of vehicles will also increase from 30 km/hr to 70 km/hr. Earlier it took 3 to 4 hours to cross this inaccessible hilly area. Now this distance will be covered in just 45 minutes.
Apart from tourism, this project is also important for the security of the country. This will make it easier for the army to reach Ladakh. That is, the goods which the Army had to carry in Air Force aircraft during snowfall, will now be able to reach by road at a lower cost.
However, we will have to wait a little longer for this. Actually, Zojila Tunnel is being built in front of Z Mod Tunnel. Its work will be completed in 2026. Only after its completion will Baltal (Amarnath Cave), Kargil and Ladakh get all-weather connectivity.
Tunnel built in 12 years, inauguration postponed due to elections
- The tunnel project started in 2012. This tunnel project was given to the Border Road Organization, but later the work was handed over to a private company.
- This tunnel, built under the PPP model, was to start by August 2023, but construction took time during the Corona period.
- The code of conduct was imposed during the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections and its inauguration was postponed for a few more days. The project took a total of 12 years to complete.
- In this project of Rs 2700 crore, Rs 36 crore was spent in land acquisition and infrastructure planning before starting construction.
- This tunnel is built at a height of 2600 meters i.e. 5652 feet above sea level. This Z shape is built about 400 meters below the existing road.
Named Z turn tunnel because of the shape of the existing road Z Mod Tunnel is built at a cost of Rs 2700 crore. Its construction started in 2018. The tunnel is part of the 434 km long Srinagar-Kargil-Leh Highway Project. Under this project, 31 tunnels are being built, out of which 20 are in Jammu and Kashmir and 11 in Ladakh.
This tunnel is built at a height of 2600 meters i.e. 8652 feet above sea level.
There was also a terrorist attack on workers last year On October 20, 2024, terrorists attacked the tunnel employees. Two terrorists entered the labor camp in Gagangir and opened fire. In this attack, 7 people including 6 workers of the infrastructure company constructing the tunnel were killed. A local doctor was also killed in the attack.
Tunnel made with NATM technology, there is no danger of mountain collapse or avalanche.
This tunnel is built using the New Austrian Tunneling Method. In this process, along with digging the tunnel, its debris is also removed. As the path inside is made by removing the debris, the tunnel wall is also prepared in the same way. This eliminates the risk of the mountains collapsing.
In NATM technique, before the tunnel work starts, the mountain, its surrounding climate and soil are examined. It is estimated that how much machinery and how many people will be able to work inside the tunnel process at one time, so that the base of the mountain is not damaged and an accident situation does not arise.
This will be Asia’s longest tunnel in 2026
The work of Zojila Tunnel being built next to Z Mod Tunnel will be completed in 2026. Only after its completion will Baltal (Amarnath Cave), Kargil and Ladakh get all-weather connectivity.
After the commencement of both the tunnels, its total length will be 12 kilometers. A 2.15 km service/link road will also be added to it. After this it will become the longest tunnel in Asia.
At present, the Atal Tunnel built in Himachal Pradesh is the longest tunnel in Asia. Its length is 9.2 kilometers. It connects Manali to Lahaul Spiti.
The army faces difficulties in delivering supplies and weapons to the Line of Actual Control with China. During snowfall, the Army becomes completely dependent on the Air Force.
With the completion of both the tunnel projects, the Army will be able to transport its goods to LAC at less cost. Besides, it will also be easier to move the battalion from China border to Pakistan border.
