Members of Sikh organizations are protesting with black flags outside theaters in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Mohali. Police is deployed here. At present the film is not being shown in any theatre. The shows have been stopped.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has accused the film of tampering with historical facts and hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community. Even after SGPC’s protest, 5 to 10 shows were being shown in every city of Punjab.

Following SGPC’s demand, Sikh organizations started protesting outside PVR Cinema on Friday. SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami also wrote a letter to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann on Thursday.

Dhami had said- ‘Emergency’ should be banned in Punjab. The film’s portrayal of the Sikhs and their struggle during the 1975 Emergency does not match history and is creating a wrong image of the Sikhs.

Dhami alleges that the sacrifice and contribution of Sikhs were ignored in the film. He was shown in a negative light. Respecting the sentiments of Sikhs, the film release should be stopped in Punjab.

Kangana Ranaut had said- There is no insult to Sikhs in the film.

Kangana Ranaut rejected these allegations and said that nothing derogatory towards the Sikh community has been said in her film. He claimed that ‘Emergency’ is based on historical facts and an attempt has been made to show the reality during the Emergency imposed in the country under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Banned film in Bangladesh

In the first released trailer of the film, the era of terrorism of Punjab as well as the era of independence of Bangladesh was shown. Due to which this film has been banned in Bangladesh. No scene about terrorism, Blue Star Operation and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala was shown in the trailer. Despite this, SGPC demanded to ban the film. In which it was said that before the release of the film, it was not passed by any religious institution.

Controversial issues shown in the film

The film depicts the events of the Emergency imposed during Indira Gandhi’s tenure as PM during 1975-77. In particular, it shows the atrocities against Sikhs, the army’s action on the Golden Temple and other controversial incidents. SGPC claims that the film has misrepresented these incidents.

No statement from Punjab government

No official statement has come yet from the Punjab government on this issue. However, State President of Aam Aadmi Party, Aman Verma said that no work will be allowed to harm the peace of Punjab. The decision to ban the film has to be taken by the Chief Minister.

Controversy started after the first trailer

Apart from Sarabjit Singh, the independent MP from Faridkot, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the supreme body of Sikhs, was the first to express objection to this film. Earlier this film was scheduled to release on 6 September 2024, but after protests it did not get clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, independent MP from Faridkot and son of Beant Singh, the security guard who assassinated former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi five months ago, had objected to the scenes shown in the trailer. He had said that reports of Sikhs being portrayed in a wrong way in the film Emergency are coming out, due to which there is a possibility of worsening of peace and law and order situation in the society.

If Sikhs are shown as separatists or terrorists in this film then it is a deep conspiracy. Sarabjit had said that this film is a psychological attack, on which the government should pay attention in advance and stop inciting hatred towards Sikhs in other countries.

Censor Board made three cuts and 10 changes in the film

  • The Censor Board had asked to show facts on the controversial statements shown during the Emergency. CBFC had said that the makers will have to present the sources of the derogatory remarks made by former US President Richard Milhous Nixon towards Indian women and the statements of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill that Indians breed like rabbits.
  • The Censor Board had sent a list of 10 changes to Manikarnika Films Private Limited. Most of these scenes were those on which objections were raised by Sikh organizations.
  • In a scene of the film, Pakistani soldiers are shown attacking Bangladeshi refugees. In this he is shown attacking children and women. CBFC had also expressed its objection to this scene. The board had asked the makers to change this scene from the film or delete it completely.
