Russia Nuclear Doctrine: Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a new nuclear policy on Tuesday. The new policy has announced that if any country supported by any nuclear power attacks Russia, it will be considered a joint attack on their country. Putin backed the new policy on nuclear deterrence on February 24, 2022, the 1,000th day since the invasion by sending troops into Ukraine.
Russia’s tough stance
In this change, Russia has included conventional missile attacks as well as attacks by drones or other aircraft. According to the change in nuclear principles, if such an attack against Russia is carried out by a member state of any alliance, then Moscow will consider this attack as an attack carried out on behalf of the entire alliance. That means, if American weapons are used against Russia, then Russia will hold the entire NATO alliance responsible for it.
Why did Russia take this step?
Russia has been enraged by Ukraine’s permission to use long-range American missiles. This step has been taken by Russia after the decision of US President Joe Biden in which he allowed Ukraine to attack targets inside Russia with long-range missiles supplied by the US. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said that America’s decision will increase tension. “If such a decision is really taken and communicated to the Kiev regime, it will certainly lead to a new round of escalation of tensions,” Peskov said, according to Russia’s state news agency Tass.
Zelensky had said this
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had said in his address to the nation on Sunday that there would be no warning about the attack. He said, “Wars are not made with words. Such things are not announced, rockets will speak.” It is also worth noting that any major air attack on Russia can give rise to a nuclear reaction. In such a situation, the signing of this policy shows Putin’s intention to use Russia’s nuclear arsenal to force Western countries to retreat. (Language)
