Sanjay Roy has been convicted in the case of rape and murder of a female doctor on duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. There will be a debate on the punishment in the court on Monday. Sanjay Roy, a civilian volunteer of Kolkata Police, was accused of committing the heinous crime on August 9 last year with a postgraduate trainee doctor at a government hospital in the northern part of the city. The court has declared Sanjay Roy guilty today.
How did Sanjay Roy come under the grip of CBI?
- On the night of 8 and 9 August 2024, at around 4:03 pm, accused Sanjay Rai entered the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and came out at 4:32 pm.
- Sanjay Roy raped and murdered a medical student in just 29 minutes, this has been proved by his mobile location and CCTV footage.
- Bluetooth of accused Sanjay Roy was found at the spot, whose MAC ID matched with the MAC ID of his mobile’s Bluetooth history.
- Bluetooth also automatically got connected to his mobile.
- Saliva from the mouth of the accused was found on the body of the victim.
- The victim’s blood was found on Sanjay Roy’s jeans and shoes.
- Sanjay’s DNA matched the evidence found at the spot.
- The five injury marks found on Sanjay’s body were blunt force injuries that occurred 24 to 48 hours ago and were caused during a rescue attempt.
- Footprint mapping and 3D mapping of the crime scene and forensic investigation made it clear that no other person had come there that night.
- Medical examination also ruled out that Sanjay Roy was not sexually impotent.
- During the case, statements of 128 people were recorded, who were very important in bringing the case to conclusion.
The hearing in this case started in a closed room on November 12, 57 days later, Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah court gave the verdict. Kolkata Police, which was investigating the case, arrested Roy on August 10. A day before this, the doctor’s body was recovered from the seminar room of the hospital. Later the Calcutta High Court handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The hearing of the case against Roy in the case of rape and murder of a doctor was completed on January 9, during which 50 witnesses were examined. The parents of the victim, a doctor, have claimed that other people were also involved in the crime and they hope that they will also be arrested and prosecuted in court.
The victim’s parents have also filed an application in the court demanding further investigation into the case. The crime sparked outrage across the country and junior doctors in Kolkata staged a prolonged protest demanding justice for the victim and adequate security arrangements in government hospitals.
