Shastri-Ponting raised questions on Shami’s injury management: Said- If he had played BGT, India would have had the upper hand; India lost 1-3

Former Indian team coach Ravi Shastri and former Australian captain Ricky Ponting have raised questions on the injury management of fast bowler Mohammed Shami. Veterans of India and Australia said in the ICC review – ‘If Mohammed Shami had been included in the team in the last round of the 5-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India could have had the upper hand.

Australia won the Sydney Test by six wickets and won the series 3-1. At the same time, Team India had lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years. Shami is trying to recover from an ankle injury at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

Shami had performed impressively for Bengal in Ranji Trophy (Multi-Day), Syed Mushtaq Ali (T20) and Vijay Hazare Trophy (ODI), which had raised hopes of his return to the Indian team, but BCCI’s medical team had ruled out the possibility of Shami’s return from the Melbourne Test citing knee swelling.

Shastri said- I would have taken him to Australia Former Indian coach Shastri said- ‘To be honest, I was very surprised by what was going on in the media as to what actually happened to Mohammed Shami in the end.’ He said- ‘Where is he when it comes to being fit? I don’t know how long he has been in the NCA (Indian Cricket Academy). There could have been proper communication regarding his condition. If I had to decide, I would bring him to Australia. Had he been there, we could have changed the results of Melbourne and Sydney Test in our favor.

During Ravi Shastri’s tenure, Team India had defeated Australia at home in the last series.

Ponting said- I had said that Australia will win because Shami is not there. Former Australian captain Ponting said, ‘I really wonder why he was not included in the team in the middle of the series. Even if he had bowled less overs, he could have made a difference.

Ponting said- ‘When you asked me initially (in the last ICC review) what would be the result of the series, I had said that Australia will win 3-1, because Shami is not in the Indian team. Had Shami, Bumrah and Siraj been in their starting team, I think the result could have been different.

Ricky Ponting has been the captain of Australia’s most successful team. He is also doing commentary.
