The team’s star bowler Norkhia has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy 2025 due to a back injury.
Enrique Norkhia’s replacement will be announced soon
Enrique Norkhia has been troubled by injuries in the past as well. He was included in the African squad in the recent limited overs series against Pakistan, but he broke his toe in the nets and could not play a single match. He even sat on the bench for SA20 franchise Pretoria Capitals. Whereas he had not played any international match since the T20 World Cup 2024 held in June last year. Now he was about to return from the tri-series for South Africa, but it could not happen and he was also out of the Champions Trophy 2025. South Africa will soon announce his replacement for the Champions Trophy.
Situation cleared after scan
According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, he had a scan on Monday afternoon and is not expected to be fit in time for the 50-over tournament. This is the third consecutive ODI tournament in which Enrique Norkhia has not been able to participate due to injury. He was to participate in the ODI World Cup 2019, but was out due to a broken thumb. Then due to lower back fracture, he was ruled out of the ODI World Cup 2023 and now had to be ruled out of the Champions Trophy.
Couldn’t play many matches due to injury
31-year-old Enrique Norkhia has not played a Test match since March 2023 and an ODI since September 2023. He has been absent for the African team on important occasions. So far, he has taken 70 wickets in 19 Tests, 36 wickets in 22 ODI matches and 53 wickets in 42 T20 International matches for the South African team. Norkhia is famous for his fast bowling, but due to injuries at important moments in his career, he has not been able to play many matches.
