Success story: It is said, “Hard work never goes wasted,” is not just a saying, but a reality. Which was shown by Manoj Kumar Rai of Supaul district of Bihar. A person who ever sold eggs, cleaned floors in offices and sold vegetables on the cart. Today, he is serving the country as an officer of Indian Ordnance Factory Service (IOFS). Manoj, who secured 870th rank in UPSC Civil Services Examination 2010, is an inspiration for every youth who wants to fight to get dreams instead of kneeling in front of difficulties.
The encouragement of the struggle arising from poverty
Born in a small village in Supaul, Manoj’s childhood was spent in deprivation. The financial condition of the family was so weak that he had to struggle for two times of bread. The situation was such that he took over the responsibilities at a very young age. When the situation worsened in the year 1996, he came to Delhi. It was expected that some good work would be found there, but luck had chosen difficult paths.
Start in Delhi was not easy. Wandering in search of a job, but when no permanent work was found, he started selling eggs and vegetables on the cart. Not only this, he also worked as a cleaning worker in offices to get his expenses. Hard work and hard work were his capital.
JNU became the center of inspiration
Manoj used to do another work in these days of struggle. Supply goods as delivery man at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi. This was the turn that gave a new way to his life. During a conversation with some students of JNU, he learned about the UPSC exam. The students advised him to continue education and told how UPSC could change his life.
This was the moment when Manoj decided not to be limited to earning a living. Rather a big dream is to dream. He enrolled at Sri Aurobindo College (Evening) and completed the BA degree in 2000.
The path of UPSC: learning from failures
As soon as graduation was completed, Manoj started preparing for UPSC. He went to Patna and took guidance from famous teacher Ras Bihari Prasad Singh. After three years of hard preparations, he gave his first attempt in 2005, but failed.
In the second attempt, English became a big challenge for him. It is mandatory to pass a regional language and English examination as a qualifying paper in UPSC. Due to weak English, he could not pass this exam and his dream remained incomplete again. In the third attempt, he passed the preliminary examination, but could not succeed in the main examination and interview. This was the time when anyone could be frustrated, but Manoj did not let himself break.
Changed strategy and success in the fourth attempt
Manoj changed the way of preparing while learning from his previous mistakes. He insisted on covering the full syllabus of the Mains exam before preparing the prelims. This covered the course of 80% prelims automatically. Also, he read NCERT books well and worked hard to improve his writing skills.
“Regardless of the darkness, the sun cannot stop the sun from rising.” With this confidence, he moved forward and achieved success in his fourth attempt in 2010. Passed UPSC exam with 870th rank.
