The resignation of former Punjab Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal from the post of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief was accepted on Friday (January 10). Regarding this, a meeting of the Working Committee of Akali Dal was held in Chandigarh, which was presided over by Working President Balwinder Singh Bhundar.

Elections for the post of Principal will be held on March 1. Gulzar Singh Ranike has been appointed Chief Electoral Officer. Membership campaign will be started from 20 January to 20 February. A target of 25 lakh membership has been set.

Shiromani Akali Dal was formed on 14 December 1920. Since then there have been 20 party heads. However, after Prakash Singh Badal took charge of the party in 1995, he remained in the post till 2008. After that Sukhbir Badal was made the head. Sukhbir Badal resigned on 16 November 2024.

Now after 30 years, such an opportunity is coming that instead of the Badal family, someone else can become the head of Akali Dal.

Apart from this, he was accused of not being able to stop the sacrilege of Shri Guru Granth Sahib and not being able to take action against the accused despite being in the government. Even before this punishment, Sukhbir Badal had resigned from the post of Chief.

Earlier there was pressure on Prakash Singh Badal also Before Sukhbir Badal, Prakash Singh Badal also faced pressure to leave the party leadership. In the year 1999, when the then SGPC chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra had asked him to leave the post of the party, regarding the celebration of the tricentenary of the Khalsa Panth. His argument was that being the Chief Minister, he has a lot of work. However, at that time Prakash Singh Badal had complete dominance in the party. Due to which Badal remained the head but Tohra had to leave the headship of SGPC.

Akal Takht had sentenced Sukhbir Badal

Shri Akal Takht Sahib had sentenced Sukhbir Badal and others on 3 December 2024 for granting amnesty to Dera Mukhi Ram Rahim, not properly investigating the incidents of sacrilege and other matters. He was ordered to perform the duty of a servant outside the Golden Temple wearing a placard and holding a lance in his hand. This punishment was given to him for 2 days.

After this, he was asked to do duty for 2 days at Sri Keshgarh Sahib, 2 days at Sri Damdama Sahib Talwandi Sabo, 2 days at Sri Muktsar Sahib and 2 days at Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, wearing a sevadar robe and carrying a lance in his hand.

On December 4, Sukhbir Badal reached the Golden Temple to undergo the punishment of Akal Takht. Here he was performing the duty of a servant at the gate wearing a placard around his neck and holding a lance in his hand. Meanwhile, a person took out a pistol and tried to shoot Sukhbir Badal.

During this time, the security personnel standing near Badal showed alertness and raised the attacker’s hand, due to which the bullet hit the wall. Sukhbir Badal narrowly escaped in this. The accused was identified as Narayan Singh Chauda, ​​a resident of Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur.
