Ghazipur MP and Mukhtar’s elder brother Afzal Ansari had also alleged at that time that Mukhtar had been given slow poison. Afzal had said- “Mukhtar had told that he was poisoned about 40 days ago and recently, perhaps on 19 or 22 March 2024, this was done again, after which his condition worsened.” Afzal Had said that on March 21, on the day of hearing of a case through digital medium in Barabanki court, Mukhtar’s lawyer had filed an application in the court alleging that his client was being ‘slowly detained’ in jail. Mukhtar’s son Omar Ansari alleged that his father was given slow poison in jail. However, officials denied this allegation. “My father told us that he was being given ‘slow poison’. Now the whole country knows about it,” Omar said.

Mukhtar, who was in jail since 2005, had more than 60 criminal cases pending against him and was convicted in the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai. The state government had assured the bench in 2023 that if necessary, it would strengthen the security of Ansari inside the Banda jail so that no harm comes to him.

During the hearing in the Supreme Court today, Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, said that documents will be provided to Omar. The bench noted that Ansari’s postmortem was conducted and later a magisterial inquiry was also conducted. It asked the state government to provide copies of the medical and investigation reports to Omar within two weeks, who could then file its reply within three weeks. Omar’s petition said that when his mother approached the Allahabad High Court for Ansari’s security, the court had ordered enhanced security for him in May 2024.
