The first Mahakumbh of the 21st century was also organized in Prayagraj. The 2001 Mahaparva was the first Kumbh Mela after the advent of electronic and satellite era. More than two dozen international print and TV media houses came to cover it. Studios were built on the spot. According to government figures, the number of devotees in this Kumbh crossed 7 crores, which was a record.

- For the first time, people were in the Kumbh Mela area with mobile phones and were connecting their loved ones sitting far away with the ‘Vachik Punya’ of Kumbh.
- For the first time, some hotels and tour-travel agencies along with the Tourism Department of UP started providing luxury facilities.
- For the first time, stalls were set up for making horoscopes using computers and PCOs were made for phones.
Resolve to lay the foundation stone of Ram temple in Prayag itself and worship the stone. The model of the proposed Ram temple in Ayodhya was placed for the first time in the 2001 Kumbh. This model was kept in the camp of Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Sector 7 of the fair. VHP’s ninth Dharma Sansad was held here from 19 to 21 January.
President of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Trust, Mahant Paramhans Ramchandra Das took the pledge to construct the temple. Earlier, in the third Dharma Sansad of Prayag Kumbh in 1989, the decision to worship the stone and lay the foundation stone in Ayodhya was taken under the leadership of Paramhans Ramchandra Das.

Just two days later, on January 26, hundreds of people lost their lives in a devastating earthquake in Kutch and Bhuj, Gujarat. The shadow of this natural disaster was seen till Kumbh.
The last royal bath took place with utmost simplicity on Basant Panchami on 29th January. Bands were not played, the saints and sages paid tribute to those killed in the earthquake after taking bath in the Sangam. All the events of Kumbh city were postponed that day.
