On 16 January 2023, women dresses staged a sit-in at Jantar-Mantar, alleging sexual abuse against the then WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh.
The Sports Ministry on Tuesday lifted the ban on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Due to which the way for organizing domestic tournaments and selection of national teams for international tournaments has been cleared. Till now the Sports Authority of India and the Adhoc Committee were handling administrative responsibilities.
The Ministry made a hurry to the under-15 (U-15) and Under-20 (U-20) National Championship in the year 2023
WFI was banned on 24 December. In fact, after becoming the President of WFI on 21 December in 2023, Sanjay Singh announced to hold the National Championship of National Junior in the field of former president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. After which the Sports Ministry banned WFI on 24 December.
On January 2023, women wrestlers staged a sit-in at Jantar Mantar against Brij Bhushan Singh In 2023, on 16 January, several women wrestlers, including Olympic medalist Sakshi Mahil, Vinesh Phogat, started a sit -in at Jantar Mantar, alleging sexual exploitation against the then WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan. Olympic medalist Bajrang Poonia also joined the dharna in his support. At that time, after the assurance of the Sports Ministry, the wrestlers ended the picket and again staged a sit -in demonstration in April.
On April 21, women wrestlers complained against former president Brij Bhushan On 21 April 2023, letters were found in the names of 6 people while addressing the SHO of New Delhi, Connaught Place. Among these 6 names were the names of many well-known players of wrestling. All these complainants then accused WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and his secretary Vinod Tomar of sexual abuse.
In these complaint letters, sexual exploitation was found on different occasions in the last 8 to 9 years. Apart from this, the complaint wrestlers also told that they have already complained to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. An overseas committee was also formed there to investigate this. A petition was also filed in the Supreme Court to register an FIR in the case.
After Sanjay Singh won, Sakshi Malik took the Padma Shri award by Sanya and Bajrang Poonia. On December 22, 2023, Bajrang Poonia presented his Padma Shri award outside the house of Prime Minister Narendra Modi after winning the election of the president of Sanjay Singh, a supporter of Brij Bhushan Singh in the WFI election. On December 21, Sakshi Malik announced to leave wrestling by placing shoes on the table in the press conference after Sanjay Singh became the president.
Sakshi Malik announced his retirement after Sanjay Singh became the WFI president on 21 December 2023.
After Sanjay Singh became the WFI president, Bajrang Poonia kept the Padashree Award outside the house of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
