PM Modi
New Delhi: In a podcast with Lex Freedman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the situation improved after a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. We helped bring back the normal situation on the border. Prime Minister Narendra Modi insisted on strengthening relations with China despite previous tensions. PM Modi also mentioned the “long history” of India-China relations and the importance of mutual understanding.
India and China have always learned from each other
PM Modi said, “Look, the relationship between India and China is not new. The culture and civilization of the two countries is ancient. Even in the modern world, they play an important role. If you look at the historical records, India and China have learned from each other for centuries. Together together, they have always contributed to global good.” PM Modi said that there was a time in history when India and China together were part of more than half of the world’s GDP. He further said that Buddhism, which had a major influence on China, was born in India and played an important role in cultural exchange between two ancient civilizations.
PM Modi said, “If we look behind centuries, there is no real history of conflict between us. It has always been about learning from each other and understanding each other.” Regarding the long -standing border disputes, PM Modi admitted that there was tension between the two countries after a clash over the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in 2020. In November last year, Indian and Chinese troops started patrolling the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh after a gap of over four years. In May-June 2020, patrolling in both these areas of East Ladakh was closed for nearly four and a half years after a clash between the two sides in the Pangong Lake and the Galwan regions.
Stress increased after clash in 2020
PM Modi said “It is true that we have a border dispute. And the events on the border in 2020 created a lot of tension among our countries. However, after a recent meeting with President Xi Jinping, we have restored the general situation on the border.” He said “We are now working to restore the situation before 2020. Gradually but of course, faith, enthusiasm and energy will return. But it will take some time, as there is a gap of five years. Our cooperation is not only beneficial, but also for global stability and prosperity. Since the 21st century is the century of Asia, we want India and China to compete in a healthy and natural way. Competition is not a bad thing, but it should never be turned into conflict.
Differences do not change disputes
The Prime Minister admitted that differences between neighboring countries are natural. He said, “Even within a family, everything is not always right.” PM Modi insisted that his government focuses on ensuring that these differences do not change in controversies. He said, “Our focus is to ensure that these differences do not change in controversies. We are actively working in this direction. Instead of differences, we emphasize dialogue, because only through dialogue we can create a stable, collaborative relationship which is extremely important of both countries.”
