This is the effect of my threats… Donald Trump said on Meta’s fact-checking program being closed

Washington:

Meta, the parent company of social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, has announced the closure of the fact-checking (verification) program. Meta has taken this decision before the swearing-in ceremony of US President Donald Trump on January 20. Meta will now start a new program called ‘Community Notes’ on the lines of X (earlier Twitter). Trump has reacted to this decision of Meta. Trump termed this decision as the effect of his threats. Along with this, Trump has also talked about changing the Gulf of Mexico and imposing economic sanctions on Canada.

Starting with the US, Meta will eliminate independent third-party fact-checking programs. The company said that it took this decision because even expert fact-checkers have their own biases. Therefore, now Meta will adopt ‘Community Notes’ model. X owner Elon Musk has called this decision of Meta a good step.

Giving himself credit for Meta’s decision, Donald Trump said, “Maybe it was because of my threats that Mark Zuckerberg had to take the decision to close the fact-check program at his company Meta.”

Donald Trump said these things in a media briefing at his Mar-a-Lago estate resort in Florida. He said, “This step of Meta is good.” When asked if he felt that it was because of his threats against Zuckerberg, Meta took this decision. To this Trump said, “Maybe. Yes, it can happen.”

Donald Trump had criticized Mark Zuckerberg during the US elections. He had claimed that the fact-checkers program had treated posts of conservative users unfairly.

Why did the relationship between Trump and Zuckerberg deteriorate?
In fact, after Trump’s defeat in the US presidential election in January 2021, there was violence in the US Capitol. After this, Mark Zuckerberg banned Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. This ban was lifted after 2 years in 2023. Because of this, the relationship between Trump and Zuckerberg had deteriorated.

At the same time, Zuckerberg did not support any candidate during the 2024 presidential elections. But, he had reacted to the deadly attack on Trump and also prayed for his safety.

Threat to impose economic ban on Canada
There is political turmoil in Canada after the resignation of Justin Trudeau from the post of PM. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has talked about imposing economic force on Canada. Trump has earlier threatened to impose higher tariffs on Canada. He has also offered Canada to become the 51st state of America. When Trump was asked whether he would impose military forces on Canada? In response he said, “Not a military force, but I would definitely like to deploy an economic force.”

The name of the Gulf of Mexico can be changed
Along with this, Donald Trump has also talked about changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico. Trump said, the name of the Gulf of Mexico can be changed to ‘Gulf of America’. He said that Mexico will have to stop giving permission to millions of people to come to our country from now on.
