New Delhi:
The rule of Bashar Al Assad has come to an end in Syria. After the end of Bashar’s regime, the rebels first attacked the Saidnaya prison. The rebels freed the prisoners from the jail. A crowd of hundreds gathered outside the jail. People had reached there in search of their loved ones who had been missing for years. The desperation was so much that pictures of breaking the jail walls have also surfaced. Whoever went to this jail would hardly come out. Saidnaya jail was so infamous that its very name inspired fear among the people.
‘House of Torture’
Saidnaya prison was often called the ‘house of torture’. The prisoners were subjected to inhuman torture here. Here the prisoners were deliberately kept hungry. The prisoners were tortured physically and mentally. There was also a system of keeping prisoners in solitary confinement for a long time. Sick prisoners were not given treatment.
According to human rights organizations, thousands of prisoners died in Saidnaya prison. Prisoners were often hanged or died of prolonged illness. The conditions in the jail were such that it was difficult for the prisoners to survive. The story of Saidnaya prison spread across the world and shocked people. Many countries criticized the Syrian government and demanded an end to human rights violations, although this had no effect on Bashar.
When was Saidnaya Jail built?
Saidnaya Prison was built in the 1960s. This jail was initially built to keep political prisoners. But during the Syrian civil war it was used extensively to detain opposition activists. A large number of opposition activists, civilians and others were detained in this jail without any trial. Serious crimes like torture, torture and murder were committed on these prisoners.
Prisoners struggled to save their lives
The outside world had very little information about what was happening inside the prison. The Syrian government tried to suppress information. Saidnaya prison was run in an organized manner, with the aim of suppressing and mentally breaking the prisoners. The prison authorities deliberately created such conditions in which it became difficult for the prisoners to survive.
Voices continue to be raised around the world regarding human rights
Many countries around the world have raised their voice from time to time regarding the human rights violations taking place in Saidnaya Jail. These countries strongly condemned the Syrian government and demanded to stop the atrocities against prisoners. Western countries like America, Britain, France, Germany have been the most vocal. These countries have presented resolutions in the United Nations Security Council and demanded sanctions on the Syrian government. However, it had no effect on Bashar.
