New Delhi:
Trump’s time is returning once again in America. After winning the election with a huge vote, Donald Trump will take oath as the 47th President of America on January 20. In his campaign, he promised to reduce immigration while giving importance to ‘America First’. This election promise of his has become a cause of great concern for immigrants and especially Indian-Americans. If Trump takes such a step, it will create problems for immigrants and their children to become naturalized US citizens.
If an immigrant’s child is born in America, he automatically gets citizenship there. This is called naturalized citizenship. Such a person has two options. First- He should retain his American citizenship. Second- He can choose to become a citizen of his country at any time in his life.
What will happen to NATO after Trump becomes President? Will there be changes in policies in the second term?
Promise was made to control naturalized citizens
It is worth noting that during the US presidential election campaign, Donald Trump had vowed to curb naturalized citizens. This was a part of his campaign document. The promise made by Trump and his deputy, JD Vance, has been said to be fulfilled on the very first day of assuming office in the Oval Office.
Actually, Trump is not in favor of giving American citizenship to such children born in America, whose parents are not American citizens. He has proposed a merit system in which skills will be given more priority than family connections. It will be tested as to what work the child applying for citizenship has the ability to do.
H-1B visa program rules will become more strict
During his previous tenure, Donald Trump had tightened the terms and conditions for H-1B. Due to which the ratio of rejection of visa applications of this category increased by 4 times. Now he has talked about making the rules of H-1B visa program more strict.
Will start the largest deportation program in American history
During his campaign, Trump had mentioned immigration policy in almost every rally. He had said, “On the first day of becoming President, I will start the largest deportation program in American history.” Trump’s intention is not only to target illegal immigrants, but he also wants to ensure that the legal process is followed.
Trump will sign an order to impose a cap on immigration
According to a document on Donald Trump’s election campaign website, he is going to sign an executive order to impose a cap on immigration on the first day of his presidency. This order will direct federal agencies to require that at least one parent be a U.S. citizen or valid permanent resident for their future children to become automatic U.S. citizens.”
Will set limit on OPT also
Trump had increased scrutiny on F-1 student visas during his first term. There is a system of Optional Practical Training (OPT) in America. Under this, foreign students are given time to work. But Trump has also talked about imposing a limit on OPT. This will make it difficult for Indian students living in America to work there.

Green card backlog crosses 1 million mark
According to an estimate, the employment-based green card backlog from India was to cross the 1 million mark in the first quarter of 2023. The average waiting time for a green card (US citizenship) is more than 50 years. This suggests that more than half a million immigrants who have come to America to study or work will die before they get citizenship. This also means that about 1.25 lakh children waiting for their citizenship will cross the legal age of 21 years. After this, if they stay there without an alternative visa like student visa, they will become illegal immigrants.
Let us tell you that Donald Trump’s Republican Party has got 295 seats out of 538 seats in 50 states. Despite giving a tough fight, Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris has been able to win only 226 seats so far.
