The ball is suddenly in Russia’s court. The time has come to test how serious it is to stop war with Russia Ukraine and restore peace. The talks between the US and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia have increased the pressure on Russia. A day after the talks, Ukraine said that it is ready to accept a 30-day ceasefire with Russia proposed by the US. Now the US has agreed to send military assistance to Ukraine and share intelligence input.
What happened in Saudi?
The Oval Office was the first official meeting between the two countries on Tuesday, March 11 in Jeddah, after publicly Tu-Tu Main between Ukrainian President Volodimir Jailonsky and US President Donald Trump. Here Ukrainian representatives accepted the US proposal, which immediately said about a 30 -day ceasefire i.e. ceasefire. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was involved in the talks, said that he will present the proposal in front of Russia and “the ball is in his court”. At the same time, Ukrainian President Jailonsky said that it is now up to America to convince Russia to agree on the “positive” proposal. Jailonsky came on television and thanked Trump and said that Ukraine is committed to searching for peace “so that the war does not return”.
Speaking to the media outside the White House after the talks, President Trump said, “This is a full ceasefire. Ukraine has agreed to it and hopefully Russia will agree on it.”
“We are going to meet them today (Russian representative) later today and tomorrow. Hopefully we will be able to make a compromise. I think the ceasefire is very important. If we can do this with Russia it will be very good. If we cannot do this, the war will continue and people will be killed, many people.”- Donald Trump
Pressure on Russia for the first time on peace agreement
Now for the first time Russia is being asked to show its commitment for peace. Announcing the peace proposal in Saudi, the US Secretary of State said that he hoped Russia would accept the peace agreement “so that we can reach its second phase, which is the real dialogue”. It is not that Russia has not shown the desire of ceasefire. Russia is also insisting on ceasefire. However, Kremlin wanted elections to be held in Ukraine before any complete conversation about the future security of Ukraine. At the same time, Ukraine will want a strong security guarantee before the ceasefire to avoid the war again.
For now, the diplomatic mileage is seen near Ukraine. However, as long as the fiery player like Donald Trump is in the equation, it is not known which side the camel will sit. The eye will be on Russia to what extent it shows seriousness on the chair of conversation for peace. At the same time, the pressure for America will be that Trump, who is seen chanting the name of Putin-Putin, persuade Russia for ceasefire.
