Naiduniya Representative, Bhopal. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has rejected a plea seeking guarantee that no harm will be caused during the burning of toxic waste from Bhopal-based Union Carbide factory at Pithampur in Dhar district. The tribunal considered as sufficient the reply of the Madhya Pradesh government, which stated that scientific reports on the effects of garbage burning had already been given to the High Court and the Supreme Court. If necessary, the gist of the scientific report can be published in the media.
What was this petition?
PG Najpande and Rajat Bhargava had filed a petition in NGT on January 3 on behalf of Jabalpur’s Nagarik Consumer Margdarshak Manch. In this, before burning the garbage, it was demanded that the Chief Secretary should declare on an affidavit that burning of this garbage will not have any adverse effect on the quality of land, water and air. Administrative officers of Bhopal, Dhar and Pithampur should also give a similar affidavit that there will be no loss to that area. The government should make public the scientific report on garbage burning. NGT judge Shev Kumar Singh and expert member Dr. Afroz Ahmed issued the decision on Friday based on the hearing held on January 15.
NGT said this in the decision
It said that since the matter is sub-judice before the High Court, it cannot be heard in the tribunal. Earlier, the state government had given a commitment before the tribunal that the administration is making the people of Pithampur and surrounding areas aware about the human and environmental impacts of disposal of waste generated from the Union Carbide disaster. The state government said that awareness sessions can also be conducted among the public by forming a team of scientists from the Central and State Pollution Control Board and members of the state university.
Government will distribute written answers to questions
During the hearing, the state government has said that written answers to the common questions raised by the common people regarding burning of toxic waste will be printed and distributed. It can also be disseminated to the public through media. The government said that if necessary, details of the scientific report could be published in the media.
