Chandigarh: Voting has started for the Mayor and Ward Councilors of seven municipal corporations in Haryana as well as some other municipalities. Seven municipal corporations- Mayor and ward members of Gurugram, Manesar, Faridabad, Hisar, Rohtak, Karnal and Yamunanagar are being voted for elections. Apart from this, by -elections are also being held for the post of Mayor of Ambala and Sonipat Municipal Corporations. Voting for this started from eight in the morning, which will be till six in the evening. Similarly, elections are being held for the city council president and all ward members of Ambala Sadar, Pataudi Jatoli Mandi, Thanesar and Sirsa.

By -elections are also being held for the post of President of Sohna Municipal Council of Gurugram district. Along with this, the presidents of 21 city committees and all the ward members are also being voted for the election. By -elections are also being held for the post of Chairman of Assandh (Karnal district) and Ismailbad (Kurukshetra District) Municipal Committee. Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was among those who voted early in the morning, who cast their vote at a polling station in Karnal. Khattar appealed to voters to vote. He said, “To vote is our democratic right and is also our duty.”

Voting being done with EVM

At the same time, Haryana State Election Commissioner Dhanpat Singh said that extensive arrangements have been made including security for the independent, fair and transparent elections of urban local bodies. Singh said that 39 candidates are contesting for the post of Mayor in nine municipal corporations. Similarly, 27 candidates are in the fray for the post of president in five city councils and a total of 151 candidates are contesting for the post of president of 23 city committees. In some wards, only one candidate has filed nomination, which has led to their uncontested election. Such wards include ward number 36 of Faridabadnagar Corporation, ward number 22 of Gurugram Municipal Corporation, ward number eight and 11 of Karnal Municipal Corporation and ward number nine of Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation. Voting is being conducted through EVMs.

Results will come on 12 March

Voting for Panipat Municipal Corporation will be held on March 9. After the completion of the election process, the counting of votes will start from 8 am on March 12 and the results will be declared on the same day. Earlier, Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will win the municipal elections. He said that after the formation of the “triple engine” government, the work will be three times faster. The Congress has appealed to voters to give an absolute majority to the party. (Input-PTI)
